M BY MONTCALM

We take a trip to the Tech-era hotel, M by Montcalm.

Most hotels seem situated to cater for Bond Street visiting art dealers or Harrods shopping international tourists. But if you’re a rather more millennial kettle of fish, and spend more time slogging away to make those tech start-up Simoleons than you do driving a rented Ferrari around Knightsbridge, then M by Montcalm might be just the place for you. The first high-end hotel located in the heart of Shoreditch’s Silicone Roundabout, M by Montcalm is housed in an incredible, futuristic looking building designed by RIBA award winning architects – with sharp angles and boasting 18 stories, it’s a pretty striking sight that towers over the artistinal cold-press stands of the surrounding area.

Fittingly, the tech-conscious attitude continues inside, with tablets to adjust lighting and a complimentary Sim card so you can stay connected during your stay. Modern it might be, but you can still expect some traditional luxuries from the M by Montcalm; a sauna and Jacuzzi can be found in the spa area (with a dangerously relaxing range of therapies and treatments on offer) and even a swimming pool decorated with vividly lusg tiles – from Versace, no less. Rooms are decked out with super-luxe amenities from Hermès, powerful rain showers for that Herbal Essences feeling, and even a choice of seductive aromas with which to douse your suite in.

Then there’s the food. Urban Coterie is the M by Montcalm’s excellent in-house restaurant, serving British Bistro classics in a polished, well-lit space. Brunch with bottomless mimosas is a great way to spend a lazy morning, or if the A La Carte is more your scene, opt for crisp ox tongue with green vegetable salsa to start, followed by a rich haunch of perfectly cooked venison that will pair nicely with a Dolcetto D’Alba DOC, Alfredo Prunotto from 2014; a great bottle that, just like everything else the M by Montcalm, shows tasteful luxury needn’t be antiquated.
