Berlin-based four piece Fiordmoss make beautifully miserable pop.
What do you do after a fire destroys your instruments and prized record collection? You rise like a electro-enhanced pop-rooted phoenix, duh. That’s what Petra and Roman of Fiordmoss did, anyway. The pair are art students, so naturally they wouldn’t let a tragic incident like their apartment burning down go to waste, they’ve carried on that destructive and gloomy sentiment through their music, even performing in front of the piercing light of bright white projections. Completing the band, Jan and Jon-Eirik hopped aboard from 2011 and 2012 and ever since they’ve been honing their sound in preparation for their debut record.
Their latest single, “Madstone” combines air-raid wails with bass-drum heavy percussion for a darkly danceable track. It’s hard to put your finger on why, but Petra has something of a sinister Kate Bush about her, we think it’s the pure drama in her vocals, sounding like she’s casting spells. Minor key synth runs sound like the shock horror moment in whodunnit films, “Madstone” is all about the mystery, and we’re hooked.
Fiordmoss are playing in Oslo at Internasjonalen on February 19th.
