Hunx and his Punx frontman, Seth Bogart is back to warp your mind.
Ever thought to yourself, “You know what’s really missing from the music videos of today? High heels getting their fair share of plastic surgery!” No, of course you haven’t, but that’s because you’re not Seth Bogart. We’re all missing the lo-fi, tongue-in-cheek sounds of Hunx and His Punx but we can’t complain when we’re getting to see the inside of Seth’s own brain next month for his debut solo album release. Coming out on cult cool-kid label, Burger Records, the LP will have cameos from Kathleen Hanna, Tavi Gevinson and Cherry Glazerr.
Today we’re premiering “Plastic!”, a track that shows all the garage-rock grit of HAHP but with an electro-tinge. Seth’s voice gets the auto-tuned treatment but we wouldn’t expect anything less on a song that’s all about fakery. Or at least the video is. “I got the idea for ‘Plastic!’ when I was very high and thinking about how weird it would be if high heels could get plastic surgery,” Seth explains. “I had already made all of these sculptures and ceramics of hair products so I decided to make a high heel and have her get a makeover in a hair salon before she gets plastic surgery. It was a good excuse make all of my sculptures video stars before I sold them. I also really love the way a high heel looks with a wig on it.” Don’t we all?
“My friend Hannah Lew (from the bands Grass Widow and Cold Beat) makes really cool stop motion videos so I asked her to direct it. My friend Abdi made the high heel execution set at the end which is a miniature pink version of the Videodrome set. My friend was in town with Debbie Harry (who was in Videodrome) and I tried to convince her to be in the video – like have her head quickly show up in the Videodrome set, but she was too busy. The only thing cooler than high heel plastic surgery is high heel execution. The final scene is shows the heels partying – smoking cigarettes and doing poppers – before being hung to death.”
There’s not really much more we can add – just remember – the coolest thing for 2016? High heel execution.
Seth Bogart tours Europe and the UK from 12th-20th May.
