South London’s Only Girl returns with a gorgeous slice of R&B infused pop that packs an emotional punch, taken from her upcoming EP.
Only Girl has been honing her own brand of soulful, understated pop since her critically acclaimed debut ‘Feel It’ in 2014. Her sophisticated productions have drawn attention from the likes of Lauren Laverne, Huw Stephens, Edith Bowman, John Kennedy and Dermot O’Leary to name a few. With the success of second single ‘Remains’ under her belt, two sold out headline shows and a handful of festival slots including Glastonbury, the South Londoner took some time to get back to the studio and the writing process. Luckily for us, this resulted in the polished forthcoming ‘Young Blood’ EP, which sees Only Girl proving herself as one of pop’s brightest hopes for 2016. The singer-songwriter kicks of 2016 by sharing the striking first track exclusively with Wonderland.
‘Young Blood’, the title track from the set, sees Only Girl explore her unique brand of aching soul-imbued pop. At once both hopeful and devastating, the track opens with choir-like gospel vocals that radiate with optimism, before that sucker-punch first line comes in; “So the last time you spoke to me, you said to me ‘my darling, oh I don’t have to leave.”’ What follows includes gorgeous sweeping synths, soft heartbeat-esque beats and soaring melodies delivered with an incredibly special, utterly beautiful vocal.
“Young Blood is about the ever-changing nature of love throughout a long-term relationship, and the realisation that the love you have with someone after many years together is going to be very different to the love you had when you first met,” Only Girl says. Dropping on Friday, the release will be followed by a four track EP on Akira Records.
