GUY GERBER – RUMORS

Hotly anticipating his RUMORS night this weekend, we got to know Guy Gerber a little better.

If you haven’t heard of Guy Gerbrer,  he’s the globe-trotting Israeli producer and DJ whose range and rate of work is world famous. From collaborating with Puff Daddy on his 2014 album 11 11, to his sell-out tours and left-field residency sets at Pacha, Gerber knows how to surprise in the best way possible. Case in point, RUMORS, the club party that began on the beaches of Ibiza and is now bringing the scorching vibes to Milan, Mexico, Brazil and, of course the UK. In fact, the London RUMORS night takes place this weekend at Great Suffolk St. Warehouse. In honour of what’s set to be a pretty unique night (if you’ve managed to grab a ticket, lucky you), we got a chance to talk to Guy himself between his sets at BPM Festival.

Tell us about the inspiration and preparation that goes into your night RUMORS.

The inspiration was from two things. First, in Ibiza, everything was always about RUMORS – who’s gonna come to the afterparty, who’s gonna play, which groupie went with that guy, stuff like that! I had a group chat about all the gossip in Ibiza and so we called it RUMORS. It was kind of a fun thing, but I would say the main inspiration is trying to be an alternative to all the big raves – I’m not against them, I like them, but I’m trying to do something a bit more bohemian. I think there’s a lot of big raves, then some things that are too mellow, but RUMORS is just proper house but in a very nice environment, with flowers and candles on the beach, without being too fluffy.

So how are you channeling that ethos now that the Rumors parties are going worldwide?

Well, we’re doing one in Mexico, one in Miami, one in Brazil, one in Milan, Paris, London… I try to take it to places where people understand the concept. It’s been interesting, in the summer I’m thinking of doing a world tour of Rumors and bringing this Sunday vibe to places other than Ibiza. Generally as an artist I try not to do the same thing all the time, I want to stay stimulated.

What for you is the best bit about performing live?

I’m more of a studio guy on the whole. When you’re performing live, you don’t know what’s going on, people have high expectations, but then I’ll get a moment where I have goosebumps, and I know that for sure a lot of other people will have it with me. I feel like I can take people on a journey, although that’s kind of a cliche. Seeing a lot of smiles… that’s the best bit.

What’s your goal for how you want your audience to feel when you’re playing in Ibiza?

Well, I want them to feel comfortable at the beginning, and then at one point overwhelmed, and then going home at the end and asking themselves some questions!

So how are you finding life in LA?

Firstly, I love LA. It’s one of my favourite places to live outside of Israel. But the big news is I’m actually moving to London soon, because I’m working on a lot of music projects and it makes sense on a musical level, for my collaborations, to be in London.

So going back to the beginning, how did you first get into music?

I was actually listening to a lot of the Smiths and I wanted to be Johnny Marr. I bought the guitar, and for most of my younger years I was into rock. But at one point, I just fell in love with house! I could talk a lot about it.

Who were your musical idols growing up?

I liked the Beatles, The Smiths, Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine, Leonard Cohen, stuff like that.

When do you feel at your best?

After three days of no sleep! I feel like at one point, your personality gets tired out, and then you just feel more free.

What is the best bit about your job?

I’m constantly challenged, and it’s never ever boring.

Are there any downsides to your job?

That I can’t stay for long in one place even if I want to, and I definitely miss some normality in my life.

If you could perform one song for the rest of your life – so one track that you always had to put in a DJ set – what would it be?

My track ‘One Day in May’.
