Y-3 ARE GOING GALACTIC

Teaming up with Virgin Galactic, Y-3 have designed clothing for the world’s first commercial spaceline.

Forget streetwear, we’re into spacewear now. Collaborative adidas and Yohji Yamamoto label, Y-3, have teamed up with Virgin Galactic to create the official apparel of the world’s first commercial spaceline.

Unveiled in New Mexico at Spaceport America, Virgin Galactic’s space terminal (it’s like the future, right?) the prototypes of the flight-suit and boots look pretty sharp. With Yamamoto’s style smarts and adidas’ technical know how, the two have created flight-suits that support a pilot’s natural position and the boots have been created with adiPRENE and TRAXION for super grip and shock absorption. Major. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s even a jacket that’s already been distributed to those who will be on the first flight.

Lawrence Midwood, Senior Director of Design at Y-3 said, “It has been a real honour to develop this product. At Y-3 we are fascinated by innovation and are continually looking to evolve, to progress and to challenge the ordinary, and this collaboration has enabled us to do so in a truly unique way. Space travel is one of the most exciting developments of our generation and working so closely with Adam and the team at Virgin Galactic has been thoroughly exciting, challenging and rewarding.”

Adam Wells, Head of Design at Virgin Galactic, added, “Our evolution into a fully-functioning spaceline presents unprecedented opportunities to create original designs in support of our unique customer experience. Together with Lawrence and the incredibly talented team at Y-3, we will explore the potential to create innovative apparel and accessories – both for our staff and for our pioneering customers – that is appropriately functional and fit-for-purpose, is thoughtfully and elegantly crafted, and is fulfilling and fun to wear and use.”
