The SoundCloud night you never knew you always wanted.
If you’ve ever been annoyed that your favourite SoundCloud artists don’t get the play time they deserve at club nights then So Future will almost certainly be up your street. Set up by K2RAH, it’s a night devoted to celebrating the “SoundCloud generation of artists and producers that are creating forward thinking, genre-bending ‘future sounds'”. This means that all manner of genres are well represented, from future bass to footwork, trap, hip-hop, and everything in between. Sound’s good? Oh, and it’s free. We sat down with K2RAH to find out more about the importance of vibes, non-stop dancing, and why IRL > URL.
Who are you and what are you all about?
By day I’m an online and social media content producer at Radio 1 and 1Xtra, and outside of that I’m a bit of a ‘slashie’; DJ/ promoter/ music curator/ photographer/ (inactive) blogger/ whatever else I need to become to make things happen.
What inspired you to set up this night? What should we expect from it?
I started So Future ’cause IRL > URL. There’s a growing microcosm of artists and producers making so much incredible forward-thinking, new music on platforms like SoundCloud. I wanted to take it offline and into a physical space where everyone can enjoy it together, til the bouncer say it’s home time.
Expect fun times and good vibes. And dancing (obvs). Non-stop dancing. Which probably means there’ll be some sweating involved. But that’s cool too – it’ll be a no judgement zone.
What kind of crowd is this for?
For anyone and everyone who wants to have a good time with zero bs attached. It’s as much for the musos as the random guy who rocks up by chance. It doesn’t really matter, let’s just have some fun.
What makes a good night?
The music, the people and the energy. Those three have to be in harmony for it to all come together. You could have the best DJs in the world playing but if the crowd aren’t feeling it and there’s no vibe – you might aswell call it a night.
How should we get ready for the night?
The best thing you can do is get an early one the night before cause you’re gonna need all your energy. Oh and make sure you round up your squad, we don’t want anyone to get left out.
Why The Alibi?
I think some would say The Alibi is one of the greatest basement clubs in all of east London. To an extent there are some parallels between the venue and the night… The character of The Alibi is very ‘rough around the edges’ and kind of grimey, and much of the new music being played at So Future is very D.I.Y, ‘bedroom producer-chic’, so it’s a pretty good match.
Plus, the sound is great and there’s a real house party vibe down there sometimes. Oh and the staff are friendly and the drinks are nicely priced. Sounds like a winner to me
Why K2RAH? What can we expect?
I realised recently that whenever I’m asked “what kind of stuff do you play?”, I tend to give some vaguely ambiguous response that I kinda hope is in line with what the person expected, but also left them a little intrigued.
It would be so much easier if we got rid of genre labels and just described music by emotions and feelings ’cause then I could just say “I play VIBES” and everyone would know what I mean.
So I won’t try and describe what you can expect – you’ll just have to come and experience it for yourself. Then afterwards you can tweet me a more accurate response to the “what does K2RAH play” question? Cool, thx.
