It’s 4pm on a Tuesday afternoon, and we’re getting closer to Death.
Detroit’s three-piece protopunk agitators play a venue of equal legend tonight, the soho shopping drag’s 100 Club, the scene of rapturous sets from punk stalwarts The Damned, Siouxsie, The Buzzcocks and Black Flag. It’s a match made in heaven – Oxford Street’s Field of Dreams, if you will.
Long before The Clash went B2B with Sex Pistols there in 1976 – and Henry Rollins was punting round DC for his first Pabst Blue Ribbon – Death’s brother trio David, Bobby and Dannis Hackney thrashed through sped-up funk and blues covers in their family garage. Soon the sound was dubbed punk, and pilfered everywhere from pock-faced, peroxide Manhattan to gnarly LA.
Death is where it all began, and 100 Club is the perfect setting for the band’s righteous return. Bring your spit.
