Amongst the hoards of young, abstract menswear designers London has recently unleashed onto the world, it’s easy to forget traditional brands. In a city that’s always pushing fashion forwards, streetwear might be ruling right now but the traditionalists aren’t ready to step down, The Woolmark Company for one are championing the old school British wool suit and tie style.
The Woolmark Company interpret the English Gentleman’s style for their AW15 campaign and collection, with a focus on concise military styles and seasonal outerwear. It’s by no coincidence that the collection features military trends, looking back at our heritage, The Woolmark Company are recognising the anniversaries of WWI and Waterloo with their English Gentleman film. They’ve built up a line of sharp, classic silhouettes, cut with contemporary layered styling. Amongst others, some of the key items featured in the film include a multi pocket and versatile utility jacket with cream Melton narrow leg trousers and a great double breasted suit with charcoal grey coat. It’s obvious that the brand is all about simple lines and classic shapes, indeed reminiscent of the very period they’re aiming to replicate. It’s amazing to think that a lot of these designs are brought to life with the same variant of fibre through various fabrics, namely Merino Wool, of which The Woolmark Company focuses on Meltons, Tweeds, Cavalry Twill and Flannels.
In Nick Leary’s video, shot for LCM in January, we see all the sights of London that the luxury brand takes inspiration from, citing our capital as the ‘styling lead’ in menswear fashion. All the looks are total Merino wool and the collection was extended this month, following on from The Woolmark’ Companys Savile Row event, creating bespoke pieces using Merino wool from 28 mills, set in a field of sheep.
