GET TO KNOW: WSTRN

We dip into the relatively unknown world of rising UK collective, WSTRN.

With Summer 2015 seeming nothing short of a distant memory, we exhaled a sigh of relief when we heard the infectiously, anthematic chorus to WSTRN’s debut track ‘In2’.

Coming up from the underground, the emerging UK collective are saturating the country with their heavy dose of nostalgic pop/rnb, with the trio’s brand firmly rooted in the artistry of their creations, which has the ability to appeal to both a niche and mass mainstream audience. Enough of the enigma, we decided to delve that bit deeper and find out what all of the fuss is about.

Who are WSTRN?

WSTRN are a London-based rap/R&B collective made up of Akelle Charles, Haile, and Louis Rei. They formed earlier this year and in that super short time have already made an impressive splash on the UK urban music scene with their debut single In2”.

How did WSTRN become WSTRN?

Akelle Charles, Louis Rei and Haile were all independent artists before coming together to form the collective  After some initial hesitation about forming a group, the three artists agreed to a studio session together. The natural and complimentary chemistry between the three musicians was immediately apparent, and the rest is history!

Where does the name come from?

Between the three of them they have a highly diverse collection of influences. From Lauryn Hill, Nas, J Cole all the way to Evelyn King and Marvin Gaye. Does that answer the question?

In2 came as a result of WSTRN’s first studio session

WSTRN’s infectious new song ‘In2’, was the result of the musicians first studio session together. The song was, as Louis Rei puts it, meeting and “making a vibe” together. Prior to this, all three artists had aspirations of a solo musical career, but have since decided that they are better as a trio.

A few unknown things about them…

Akelle toured around the country performing at the age of 11/12, Haile used to be an athlete and Louis can do 2100 football kick ups at the age of 7! Well, there you go.
