PREMIERE: BASENJI – “ABOUT YOU”

Australian bedroom-producer-cum-rising-star Basenji is set to release his debut EP tomorrow, Wonderland reveals the lead track ‘About You’.

Basenji – real name Sebastian Muecke – has been making waves on Soundcloud for a while now with his eclectic sound that combines electronic beats with a mixture of well-curated, sometimes calming, sometimes hyperactive, instrumental flavours and vocal samples. We’re excited to premiere ‘About You’, a collaborative effort with Oscar Key Sung, a vocalist and artist from Melbourne who is also set for big things given that his ethereal and beautifully gentle voice has been wooing the internet over the past two years.

Here, he lays tender, intimate lyrics (“Wanna know your favourite colour, favourite top / Wanna know where you went to school”) over Basenji’s piano driven, electronic-R&B inflected sounds and the result is an addictive song that feels both familiar enough to be instantly likeable, but also sufficiently unique to keep sticking on repeat.

Basenji’s first EP, Trackpad, is out on the 25th September on the Australian-based label Future Classic and if this release is anything to go by, we can’t wait to hear the whole thing. Get set for a dreamy ride through Muecke’s trademark lush synth-scapes, airy vocals, and classically-influenced plucked harps.

The multi-talented Muecke has also released a line of clothing, caps and even a hand-towel emblazoned with his own designs: a riff on Versace’s Medusa-head logo that replaces the iconic long-haired goddess with a dog’s head (the Basenji is, after all, a breed of hunting dog). There’s even a lookbook that’s all styled in a playful, monochrome street-fashion vein that should be very familiar to Wonderland readers; he certainly seems like our kind of guy.
