Wonderlist

This week’s #Wonderlist features new music from Little Mix and Le1f, as well as a belated entry for “Song of the Summer” from Becky G and a remarkable debut from Dua Lipa.

Little Mix – Hair

Little Mix has dropped 2015’s finest breakup song, a song so fierce that you almost feel sorry for the men who have dared cross this band. When Little Mix breakup with a boyfriend they don’t just sit around and wallow like a bunch of Miss Havishams, no, instead they’re inspired to write a banging pop song. ‘Hair’ is the second single from forthcoming album Get Weird.

Le1f – Koi

Le1f is the latest artist to call upon the producing talents of SOPHIE and the resulting track is a match made in heaven.  Instead of being overwhelmed by SOPHIE’s very distinctive production style, ‘Koi’ is an excellent showcase of Le1f’s talent and wit as a performer. Le1f’s new album Riot Boi will be released later this year via Terrible Records/XL.

Benjamin Verdoes – Highly Emotional

Seattle songwriter Benjamin Verdoes first came to the world’s attention as part of Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band where he established himself as incredibly gifted songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. ‘Highly Emotional’, the first single taken from his new solo EP The One & The Other, is a huge departure from his last solo record The Evil Eye. Gone is the math-rock, replaced by sparse beats and a haunting vocal. ‘Highly Emotional’ is an enticing glimpse into the next phase of Verdoes’ career.

Daye Jack – Save My Soul

Atlanta rapper Daye Jack has shared the video for ‘Save My Soul’, one of the standout tracks from his excellent mixtape Soul Glitch.  Daye Jack, aged just 19, has already found his voice.  An extremely confident and versatile performer, he is equally comfortable rapping or singing. Jack is also an intriguing producer, capable of marrying together many disparate influences. He explains that ‘Save My Soul’ is: “the struggle of sticking to your true self even when the outside tries to change you or mould you differently”. This is a struggle that Jack appears to have overcome with ease. Soul Glitch comes to you via Warner Bros.

Dua Lipa – New Love

‘New Love’, by 19 year old Dua Lipa, is one of the year’s finest debut singles. The track is produced by Emile Haynie (Lana Del Rey, FKA Twigs), and Andrew Wyatt (Miike Snow) but it’s Lipa’s vocals that shine, the perfect accompaniment to the drum heavy production. Judging from this debut, Dua Lipa is definitely one to watch/listen out for.

Becky G – Break A Sweat

Tweens everywhere were left devastated when Austin Mahone and Becky G announced that they had called time on their relationship. However, if her latest single ‘Break A Sweat’ is anything to go by, Becky G has bounced back. Released in the last week of August, and packed with more innuendo than a Carry On film, ‘Break A Sweat’ is a belated contender for Song of the Summer. Since 2014 Becky G, the Kenneth Williams of pop, has released a string of pop gems so we eagerly await a new album.
