NEW NOISE: NOONIE BAO

Swedish singer-songwriter Noonie Bao has been learning the ropes from pop princesses Charli XCX and Carly Rae Jepsen ahead of the release of her EP.

Noonie Bao can thank her parents for her musical success. You’ve got to love your child a lot to let them loose on a drum kit you’ve replaced your sofa with in the living room. You might not have heard of Noonie yet, but you’ve certainly heard her work as a hitmaker, writing songs for Charli XCX, Clean Bandit, Rita Ora and Carly Rae Jepsen to name a few. So if she’s a singer churning out number ones like there’s no tomorrow, why isn’t she saving them for herself?

This duality is part of Noonie’s nature, after she started writing songs as a child she put half into songbooks for her friends and saved the rest in a diary for herself. She’s sharing them with us all, finally! Noonie’s already found fame in her home of Sweden where her 2012 debut was a hit but she’s ready to take on everyone overseas. “I’m In Love”, Noonie’s latest solo track is out now and it’s a concoction of summer funk guitar licks and Noonie’s sugar-sweet vocals, she just might be racking up number ones of her own soon.

So tell us, is Noonie Bao a nickname or your real name?

It’s a nickname I got from a friend in school a long time ago. From nowhere he told me he thought I looked like a ”Noonie Bao” and from that day everybody calls me Noonie.

What was your first encounter with music?

I grew up in the suburbs of Stockholm and my parents are both really into music and they turned the living room into a music room. My first encounters comes from that room watching my parents writing songs and singing them to me.

Which artists did you grow up listening to, and who do you listen to now?

I grew up with Michael Jackson, Sting and Enya. They still inspire me, but lately I’ve been into Rae Sremmurd, Hannah Diamond and Susanne Sundfør.

Did you move to Switzerland to pursue a career in music?

Not really, I jumped out of a music school in Sweden and needed something new. I had some friends in a town called St.Gallen, which is a beautiful place so I decided to move there. It’s still to this day one of my most creative periods ever. I spent a lot of time alone writing songs. It’s a small town so there wasn’t much else to do there.

How would you describe your output?

I hope my music strikes people as imaginative and honest, which is what I feel when I write it.

What message do you hope to portray with the visuals from your new “I’m in Love” music video?

I wanted to portray the the way you feel when you are so in love with someone so that you sometimes fall into destructive behavior. Like trying to change who you are to fit the other person better or just go crazy all alone in your apartment waiting for a text.

What was your favourite song to co-write on?

Carly Rae Jepsen’s latest single ”Run Away With Me” cause we had so much fun in the studio. Carly is super talented and fun to work with.

How is the writing for your second album going, can we expect it anytime soon?

It’s going great! My EP will be released this fall. I’m super excited to share with the world after 2 years in the studio!

Do you have any other projects you are currently working on?

I’ve been working with Charli XCX on her next album. I love to write with her and she inspires me in many ways.
