When Matilda Lowther isn’t opening shows for Burberry, she studies sculpture in London and rides her pet horse, Rushy, across the Lake District’s hills.

Wonderland: Hi Matilda. When were you scouted?
Matilda: I was scouted by my agency Select Models on a school trip with my art class when I was 17.
W: You study art now, right? Which medium do you work with?
M: Yes I’m currently in the middle of an art foundation course at City and Guilds, which I love. I’m studying sculpture, which has been really interesting, and also really physically testing – I sometimes find myself hammering wood in a workshop at 9am having been to a fashion event the night before. It’s like I have an alter ego. It’s great.
W: Who are your favourite artists?
M: At the moment, Karla Black and Eva Hesse.
W: What about photographers?
M: It would probably be Irving Penn and David Hockney.
W: So tell us, have you ever had any memorable model mishaps?
M: SO MANY model mishaps – getting stuck in a giant plastic bubble outfit is pretty up there.
W: It sounds it! What’s your all-time favourite fashion show?
M: It has always been and will always be Burberry. They represent a lot for me and have given me the most amazing opportunities.
W: Is Burberry your favourite designer too? M: Burberry, along with Acne and Chanel.
W: What’s the best item in your wardrobe?
M: Probably my bright red Christopher Kane biker jacket or Chloe studded boots.
W: So what would you be if you weren’t a model?
M: If I wasn’t a model, I might take up wild swimming and write a book about it.
W: Yeah, Instagram tells us you can scuba dive, what other sports or activities do you partake in?
M: I’ve recently become a certified diver (I’m pretty proud of that one). I’m a sports freak. I run, high jump, horse ride, play hockey, ski, water ski and my next big mission is to crack surfing (so far not so good).
W: So how do you spend the perfect day off?
M: Usually when I’m not modeling I’ll be in my art college. But my ideal day off would definitely be spent riding my horse on the hills at home in the Lake District.
W: Do you have your own horse?
M: Yes, he’s called Rushy, he’s a babe. I miss him!
W: Tell us a secret about yourself…
M: Big secret… I once crashed a wedding with my friend. Not a good move. I’m also ridiculously superstitious.
W: You’re a Cancer right? What are your best and worst Cancer traits?
M: Best Cancer traits (I hope) that I have are creativity and faithfulness. Worst, overemotional (worryingly true).
W: Okay, last one. If you had to soundtrack your life with one song, what would it be?
M: The soundtrack to my life is forever changing, but maybe “Little Bitty Pretty One” by Thurston Harris and the Sharps. It’s a corker.
