Currently having an obsession with the psychedelic, and inspired by the video for ‘One Night Only’, here’s Yasmin’s top ten trippy tunes.
Outkast – ‘She Lives in my Lap’
Would be rude not to include any Outkast in the list, gone with this one for the hypnotic production and the wavy vocals from Andre 3K, probably my favourite track off ‘The Love Below’.
Parliament – ‘Sir Nose d’voidfunk’
You don’t really get much more psychedelic than these dudes, discovered this track whilst trying to hunt down the sample used in Aaliyah – ‘Come Back in One Piece’, it’s a trippy masterpiece.
Donna Summer – ‘I Feel Love’
Don’t think this one needs much of an introduction, the rhythm on this sends me into a trance whenever I hear it.
Dead Prez – ‘Mind Sex’
Light the incense, pour some herbal tea. amazing video on this one, production wavy as fuck and lyrics/concept – i don’t think i’ve ever heard a rapper spit about trying to have a good conversation instead of getting it on, still nice and original 15 years on.
Deee-lite – ‘Call Me’
Deee-lite were weird but wonderful, artwork always on point. this is my fave off their ‘Dewdrops in the Garden’.
Missy Elliot – ‘The Rain (supa dupa fly)’
Need whatever Hype Williams was smoking when he came up with the treatment for this video. Timbaland and Missy were titans of the trip, the lazy flow, the sample and that womp womp bass, a steady head nodder.
Mount Kimbie – ‘Before I Move Off’
Heard this on a mix Jamie xx did for Benji B a couple of years back, one of those tracks that pulls you in and loops you up. Trippy video too, pun intended.
One Self – ‘Bluebird’
Pure vibes here, DJ Vadim on production, slow funked out goodness.
Dr Dre – ‘Xxplosive’
The instrumental for this was my ringtone for about a year, has a strangely sedative effect on me whenever I hear it. the riff is pure hypnotic.
Fatima Yamaha – ‘What’s a Girl to Do’
This is the kind of tune you wanna lie on a hill at a festival and watch the sun come up to, steady uplifting, the little vocal sample that comes in at 4 minutes always makes me feel a little emotional too.
‘One Night Only’ by Krystal Klear feat. Yasmin is due for release 16 March on Island Records/Rinse.
