Happy Birthday Britney! We take a look at our favourite pop-star’s seven most outrageous fashion moments to celebrate her 33rd birthday.
December 2nd should probably be a national holiday in ode to the legacy of Britney Spears. She’s given us so much, serving up infectious pop since 1999, she’s taught us all some life lessons through her lyrics and looks, usually not to copy them, but she’s had as many triumphs as mistakes. Plus, she’s sold over 100 million records, you’re allowed to be experimental with your style when you run the music industry. Everyone has a fave Brit moment, here’s our top seven – Happy Birthday Britney!
TOXIC
Not only was this one of the most catchy songs to come out of 2003, the whole world watched as Britney strutted around in her diamond bodysuit. She looked incredible, but it’s hardly practical, you couldn’t exactly nip out to the shops in that could you?
DOUBLE DENIM
Less is more Brit. Always remember less is more. We see you there too Justin and you should not be smiling. We know double denim had a bit of a revival a couple of years back but this is hardly Marques’ Almeida is it? This was in 2001 at the American Music Awards, never forget.
BABY ONE MORE TIME
This one is totally forgivable because we all coveted the pink fluffy scrunchies for the whole of the noughties. The 1999 hit ‘Baby One More Time’ was a runaway success and inspired all of us to go as schoolgirl Britney to a fancy dress party at least once in our lives.
BILLBOARD AWARDS
We’re usually totally supportive of most fashion trends and co-ords are everywhere right now but we don’t think the Princess of Pop matching coat-underwear-hat combo is going to have a resurgence any time soon. She still managed to win two awards though.
OOPS I DID IT AGAIN
You’ve got to hand it to Britney, she loves a bodysuit, she looked good in them too, but high-necked, full-length red PVC, really? Despite squeaking whilst throwing shapes for video to ‘Oops I Did It Again’, Brit sold 400,000 thousand copies of the single here in the UK which is no surprise, but does anyone else remember that bit of Titanic dialogue in the middle? Weird.
ROLLING STONE 2000
This wasn’t particularly outrageous at the time but if we were heading out in a stars and stripes halter top and red leather trousers in 2014, we’d think twice. Let’s all just take a minute to remember prime-time Britney when she could get away with wearing anything and we’d all still adore her and probably even copy her.
2002 VMAs
Someone should have sat Britney down in the early noughties and explained that leather isn’t a dress-code requirement. We loved Britney for these kind of moments though, for having fun and never taking herself too seriously. Happy Birthday Brit.
