Buckinghamshire born trio – Charlie Costello, Charles Bush and Toby Taylor – aka. Big Sixes are cultivating creativity, picking up momentum for all the right reasons. Born in a box room in Chesham, the boys knew a lot more about the type of band they didn’t want to be, than the type they did. But as with all projects, the learning curve is intrinsic to the output. Serving free downloads for a year and self-directing their music videos, the boys put on a string of raucous and memorable DIY shows to a tight-knitt local following. And on the back of their releases ‘Swallowing Flies’ and ‘The Hunter’, the latter received valued air play from BBC Radio 1, leading to the band hooking up with Easy Life / Sony RED.

Each a strong believer in pioneering creativity in all of its guises, the boys value a font type as important as a guitar tone, realising that t-shirts are more than a feeding-enabler whilst on tour. Today we premiere the short film for ‘The Idles’, lead singer Charlie Costello tells us more:

“We really wanted to make visuals for every track on the EP. We had come up with all these ideas for static shots, single shot videos, time lapses. That sort of thing. We took it to our manager, who introduced us to an amazing Director named Frederick Lloyd and then gave us a budget. We weren’t sure what a ‘budget’ was but we looked it up on google and then smiled,” laughs Charlie. “The idea was to create something which was beautiful and ambiguous. Something that would resonate differently to different people, in different situations. Where your interpretation of the film alters your own emotional context, every time you watch it. We also wanted to create something that was visually stunning. Not just the way it’s shot, but what happens in the shot that can make the ordinary seem fascinating. Taking great pride in the flourish of the wings, the mannequin arms, the way the light passes. So yeah we made a short film. And Freddie made it snow inside! The lunatic!”

Have a listen and a watch – you’ll soon see what all the fuss is about.
