Summer 2014’s breakout star Melissa Steel, makes us a playlist of her essential summer tunes to ease us into autumn
If you’ve been listening to the radio at all in the last few months, chances are you’ve heard “Kisses for Breakfast” the frantically addictive debut single from Bradford native Melissa Steel. The 21 year old has bounced onto the scene with a sound unapologetically drenched in dancehall influences and firmly rooted in her Jamaican heritage. With the final remnants of summer slowly fading away and the leaves beginning to turn brown we asked 2014’s breakout star to make us a playlist of her favourite summer jams, and we think you’ll agree it’s exactly the thing to ease us gently into autumn.
Top 10 Summer Jams:
1. Will Smith – Summertime
An obvious choice but I think everyone would agree that it’s essential for any summer playlist
2. Nelly – Hot In Here
I remember this came out when I was in school and everyone loved it. It never gets old!
3. R Kelly – Ignition
If I’m out in a club, my friends and I will still go crazy for it. Such a tune!
4. Popcaan – Party Shot
This track reminds me of being in Jamaica. I go there every summer and it reminds me of the beach parties out there.
5. Kove – Way We Are
The reason I’ve picked this track is because I’ve been performing it all summer so it makes me think of being on stage
6. Aaliyah – Rock The Boat
Aaliyah is one of my biggest inspirations and this song has an island feel to it which reminds me a lot of my first single, “Kisses For Breakfast”!
7. Rudimental – Feel The Love
I saw them perform this track at V Festival and the crowd was amazing. I’ve never seen so many people go that crazy during a performance before!
8. Bob Marley – Three Little Birds
He is such a legend and this is a melow and positive song. Like most other Bob Marley songs I can just imagine myself on a beach whenever I hear this!
9. Sweet Female Attitude – Flowers
This song takes me back to when I was growing up and Garage was everywhere.
10. Ja Rule – Livin’ It Up
This is such a classic tune!
