Taking it back to the ‘90s, Hot Tub Cinema have transformed the former Shoreditch railway station into a cinematic paradise for seven nights from August 14th-21st. Hand picking their selection of the most rated nostaligia worthy flicks, the former train platform will serve as an auditorium, part open air, part covered.

Re-visiting the decade of pedal pushers, platforms, blow-up backpacks and (hideous) transfer tattoos, you can sit back in your tub entertained by the likes of Clueless, American Pie, Pretty Woman and Austin Powers amongst others – celebrating cinema the relaxing way.

We catch up with founder Asher Charman, to find out more:

How did you think of an idea like Hot Tub Cinemas? Can you give us the backstory?

I bought my first hot tub roughly seven years ago. Moving into a house with two good friends, I persuaded them to pay a third of the cost each. It didn’t take them long to learn to love it! The genesis for Hot Tub Cinema came roughly six months after our initial purchase – we already had the constituent parts – the hot tub, a second-hand projector, and a passion for film. One evening we decided we wanted to do both – use the tub and watch a movie. So I decided to point the projector out the kitchen window, onto a bed sheet hung on the washing line, whilst we all enjoyed a soak in the tub! The result was unanimous – we have to do this again! In the intervening six years we’ve purchased an increasing number of new tubs -currently we own over 40, upgraded our projector and worked tirelessly to find perfect venues to share our unique experience… in its current ‘rooftop’ form Hot Tub Cinema has been active since the summer of 2012

Why did you think an idea like this would click?

It was so much fun when we did it for friends we just knew it would be popular once we offered it to the wider world.

What were people’s initial reaction to your idea?

Our guests usually arrive with a sense of excitement and trepidation. It is quite a site to see such a large number of hot tubs in one place. It quickly transforms into surprise and delight once our guests are in the tub and enjoying a few drinks.

What are your recommendations for the five best films to watch when you are in a tub?

Anchor Man, Top Gun, Labyrinth, Ghostbusters and Hot Tub Time Machine!
