Through the medium of a music video ‘Used to Be My Friend’, plump with references to film noir and nostalgia, meet Producer ‘Odysseus’ and Hackney heroine Ruby Goe
The unsuspecting producer introduces the tone of the video with a metallic beat, raspy, sanguine, yet dripping with melancholic emotion. Soon to be followed by the raw talent of alt-pop songstress, Ruby Goe, an ex-backing singer with a voice worthy of pole position, matching the mood note for note.
Hiding behind the anonymity of a costume within the video allows the jarring beats to ring in sonic waves, accompanying a voice that could be equally as present in a heartfelt anthem (a la Candi Staton), soft yet strong.
The subtly saturated imagery omits a a collage of the sarcastic film House of Wax, in simultaneous duo with a man donning a Chewbacca costume. The love affair between mannequin and Wookie represents the uncontainable emotion in a blithe yet lighthearted way. The highly emotive vocals and raw music remain intact.
