BACKSTAGE: SAINT LAURENT SS14

Saint Laurent, Saint Laurent, Saint Laurent: the land where Debbie Harry died and moved to Paris.

Hedi Slimane’s third season at the house and he’s showing that he’s here to stay. The third time proved a charm. Slimane presented loud and quasi kitsch pieces that were reminiscent of Senior Prom 1988.  We loved. It felt young and powerful, with the revolving lights above the runway and ear splitting soundtrack. Sequins, lame, leather and zippers brought out rockstar in the SL woman this season, not far away from Slimane’s last two collections.

Slimane did stay true to the house with the classic Le Smoking jacket and pantsuit, as well as perfectly modern translations of archive prints. Standout pieces were a perfectly constructed suit modelled by Anmari Botha and a LBD with a shoulder detail so loud that it’s almost muted, modelled by Sam Rollinson. These looks were effortless, enough to not get caught in the flaming lips and glitter dust. The looks seemed to be more Los Angeles (Slimane’s base) than Paris (Saint Laurent namesake).
