PARIS COUTURE WEEK: BACKSTAGE AT ULYANA SERGEENKO SPRING 2013

What’s that we smell in the air? Ah, nostalgia. Ulyana Sergeenko served up prairie doll prettiness and fairytale femininity at her second couture show.

Not everyone can make the leap from street style darling to couturier, but then again, not everyone is Ulyana Sergeenko, Russia’s most beloved It Girl.  Little wonder that Russia’s most beloved It Girl summoned a stellar front row (we spotted Carine Roitfeld, Natalia Vodianova, Derek Blasberg, Dita Von Teese, Hamish Bowles and Olivier Zahm) to her second couture outing.

As for the collection? Think of it as a chopped-and-screwed Gone With The Wind as viewed through the lens of a Russian folk tale. And if you didn’t clock that, there was always that massive storybook the models emerged from… From a floor-length emerald gown that paid homage to Scarlett O’Hara to wide-brimmed prairie hats paired with paper-bag bloomer shorts, the collection was coherent and playful without tipping over into dramatic excess. It looks like Sergeenko really is living a charmed life.
