NEW NOISE: GLASS TEETH

GLASS TEETH is one of Boston’s freshest electronic acts and a pioneer of the sinister, crepuscular sounds of witch haus, a genre on the cusp of detonation. Wonderland caught up with Xavier Glass, who recorded an exclusive new track, ‘bb eyez’, for us.

How would you describe yourself and the audio stimulation that you create?

It’s hard for me to categorise succinctly, but I guess dark electronic or dark trance. Some tracks are slower and more ethereal while others are straight-up club songs with trance and rave elements.

Your sounds have been described as ‘disco for the undead’. Is that an appropriate label?

Definitely. There’s a dark thread that runs through my music for sure, but I think it’s also accessible and danceable. When I first started the project I was making more experimental, industrial stuff. Since then it’s evolved pretty organically into clubbier territory through playing shows and wanting to create a certain vibe live.

Has music always been something that you’ve wanted to pursue full-time?

I come from more of a visual arts background but I’ve always wanted to make music in some capacity. I studied piano for a couple years growing up and played bass in bands and stuff. Then I got into DJing while at film school in New York and started making music as GLASS TEETH. For me the visual/video component of the project is almost as important as the music itself.

Now that the world has given nod and acknowledged the ‘witch house/haus’ genre, has this propelled you somewhat from the underground?

Yeah, I think so. A lot of people have their problems with the ‘witch house’ genre tag or whatever but if it’s helped people find and hear my music then I couldn’t be happier. I’m also just excited that people are gravitating toward dark music again.

What inspires you, either musically, visually or in general?
Lately, Above & Beyond, the Field, Gesaffelstein, the internet, my girlfriend and my cat.

You were included in the list of the ‘12 best new bands from Boston‘ most recently. When can we expect a full-length record?

I’ve started work on material for a full-length and I’m really excited about it! It’ll be done later this year but I’m still looking for the perfect fit in a label to release with. I would describe the new stuff I’m working on as like equal parts euphoric and sad. I can’t wait to share it.

Who are you working with on the record? Any collaborations with artists or producers?

I’m working on collaborations with some really cool Boston artists that I’m friends with: blk.adonis, MOON, False Witness and look out for a collaboration I worked on with Mascara.

You also recently supported Die Antwoord. How was that experience?

It was so dope! I really didn’t know what to expect but the crowd were awesome. I did a DJ set but I spun a lot of my own tracks and the response was super positive.

Finally, where can we catch you in 2012? Any UK dates at all?

Nothing planned yet but I’ve been wanting to for a while. Hopefully something soon. Hit me up, UK.
