NEW NOISE: ELLIPHANT

Ellinor Oloysdotter is Stockholm’s Elliphant. One to file alongside Diplo, MIA, Santigold, her newest video for single “Tekknoscene” is a halogen-lit noir, which revives Enter the Void’s frenzied opening credits. We spoke to the singer and producer, who was busy freaking out ahead of her support slot with fellow Ten Records swedes Niki and the Dove at London’s XOYO on the 16th.

How and when did you start producing?

When I bought my first LP I was able to do it myself – like, about three years back. I was tired of waiting for others and started producing and recording my own shit and vocals. Then I sent them around to all different dudes. Just like a slut. 🙂

Who would you say are the musicians who have inspired your music the most?

Billie Holiday, for sure. No Doubt, The Fugees, The Prodigy when I was kid. But it was when I first heard Portishead and songs like “Glory Box” and “Roads” that I knew I wanted to create my own music one day.

Did you always know and want to produce and MC in your music?

I guess so, yeah. But I never had a plan really.

Who’s your favourite present day musician? Why?

Not one – different shit all the time.

You’ve been compared to Diplo and MIA lots. Are you tired or flattered by the comparisons?

I’m bliss over Mia G for opening that bigger ear to this kind of sound. I like Diplo, too. To me they in the same pocket of the 2000SoundMasters, I just don’t listen to them that much. But the world do, so all good.
Not tired na; they work it. Big up.

What’s next? Can we expect festival slots? An LP?

XXXpect.
Respexxxs.
