Forget streetwear, we’re into spacewear now. Collaborative adidas and Yohji Yamamoto label, Y-3, have teamed up with Virgin Galactic to create the official apparel of the world’s first commercial spaceline.

Unveiled in New Mexico at Spaceport America, Virgin Galactic’s space terminal (it’s like the future, right?) the prototypes of the flight-suit and boots look pretty sharp. With Yamamoto’s style smarts and adidas’ technical know how, the two have created flight-suits that support a pilot’s natural position and the boots have been created with adiPRENE and TRAXION for super grip and shock absorption. Major. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s even a jacket that’s already been distributed to those who will be on the first flight.

Lawrence Midwood, Senior Director of Design at Y-3 said, “It has been a real honour to develop this product. At Y-3 we are fascinated by innovation and are  continually looking to evolve, to progress and to  challenge  the  ordinary,  and  this  collaboration  has  enabled us to do so in a  truly unique way. Space travel is one of the most exciting developments of our generation and  working so closely  with  Adam  and  the  team  at  Virgin  Galactic  has been  thoroughly exciting, challenging and rewarding.”

Adam Wells, Head of  Design at Virgin Galactic, added, “Our  evolution  into  a  fully-functioning spaceline presents unprecedented opportunities to create original designs in support of our unique customer experience. Together with Lawrence and the incredibly talented team at Y-3, we will explore the potential to create innovative apparel and accessories – both for our staff and for our pioneering customers  – that is  appropriately  functional  and  fit-for-purpose,  is  thoughtfully  and  elegantly  crafted, and  is  fulfilling  and  fun  to  wear  and  use.”

Get ready for lift off with Y-3.

Three straight lines gained fluidity with the help of Tao Ye at Y-3’s Paris Men’s show.

Citing their united quest as, “to define and dress one singular object: the human body in motion” Y-3 showed everyone how they achieved that this season with their black blocked collection. Kitted out in super light fabrics, looks flowed surprisingly compared to the strict rigidity we’re used to from model walks. Black is probably the last colour you want to wear in the summer sun but adidas and Yohji Yamamoto’s gang know that for some, there’s no other option. For the committed devotees, Y-3 has given us loose apparel in ballooning thin materials, baggy trousers that look like parachute silk, sheer layers and androgynous shapes.

Yes, it’s ‘sportswear’, of sorts, the sneakers (adidas’ Boost and the Qasa as well as new model, the Kyujo) are a giveaway but the graphic prints of Yamamoto’s self-portraits in motion and open silhouettes elevate Y-3 to the high fashion field, ready to match any of the old fashion houses. Meanwhile the addition of the TAO Dance Theatre, choreographed by Tao Ye, made the event more of a performance than a show, mesmerising in the same materials as the collection, six dancers took to the floor to open the show against a windswept backdrop.

Tennis has always been a little more chic than other sports when it comes to the kit. We’ve all spent summers trying to recreate all white looks with pleated skirts or polo shirts, yet much to our dismay we’ve just ended up with grass stains and slanted visors. Now it’s far easier thanks to adidas. Combining the best of both worlds, adidas have released a new collection that pairs  the styles of Y-3 and adidas Tennis. The Roland Garros Collection by Y-3 is out just in time for the French Open.

Of course the collection looks great in black, white and Hawaiian prints (!!), but this being adidas, it’s all super high-tech too. The pieces use adidas’ Coolmax technology. We’re not really sure what that means either, but we’ve been assured that it maximises ventilation and comfort and if it’s good enough for all the ball boys and girls at the tournament, as well as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Ana Ivanovic, then it’s good enough for us.

Y-3 have teamed up with London superstore Harrods to fill a 25 square metre space that will include fixtures featuring new designs. The mid-rails, which have been designed exclusively for Harrods, are set within a jet grey woven rug to add contrast in texture.

One of the most striking features of the design is a black glass wall with an integrated LED screen and backlit branding. These fittings are the perfect way to house Y-3’s AW14 menswear, footwear and accessories of which stand-out pieces include high-shine black leather jackets and manga-art style pieces which bring a graphic texture to the clothes.

Jason Broderick, Harrods’ fashion director of Menswear, sports and fine watches said: “We are delighted to showcase the new Y-3 concept which is the first of its kind in Europe. This is an exciting time for our fifth floor aand this innovative newspace is a welcomed addition to our men’s casuals offering. With its sports-styleaesthetic Y-3 continues to be a favourite with our customers.”

Y-3 : Runway - Paris Fashion Week - Menswear F/W 2014-2015

Yamamoto references superheroes and couturiers of the 60’s as the inspiration for the latest collection; ‘cut for an active and fighting lifestyle’ is how Yamamoto described it. Playing upon utopia and dystopia with hand-drawn manga comic strip bringing graphic texture to clothes and dramatic, voluminous silhouettes in classic Yohji Yamamoto black. The palette also included powerful punches of primary reds, yellows and cobalt blue with fluorescent trims on black shirts. The superhero theme also came in to play on comic graphic t-shirts with classic comic strip slogans such as ‘TO BE CONTINUED’.

Y-3 : Runway - Paris Fashion Week - Menswear F/W 2014-2015

Y-3 also showed a range of womenswear, which was kept masculine with tailored blazers although added feminine touches such as hourglass dresses and A-line skirts.
With an emphasis on mobility and functionality with a sporty edge, loose trousers were paired with hooded tops and capes draped over models shoulders all worn with trainers. The iconic black and white Adidas stripe came in to play on garments and as part of the shows runway design.

Avant-Garde Master Tailor Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 brand celebrate a decade of style by releasing a Limited Edition editorial book, ‘Y-3 10 Year Book’ this Autumn.Y3

The visual album is beautifully presented and showcases a trailblazing 10 years of the brand including it’s epic fashion shows, their hyper kinetic ad campaigns as well as the breakthrough clothing that fused style and sport with Yohji’s darkly poetic signature aesthetic. Fashion Writer Hilary Alexander summarises the book perfectly by saying, “The 10th anniversary of Y-3 celebrates the fusion of two seemingly opposed forces: avant-garde fashion and hi-tech sportswear. The collaboration with Adidas has imbued function with a renowned and unconventional design aesthetic and his constant reinterpretation of the three stripes continues to amaze and delight”

It’s a spine we most definitely hope to see poking from our book shelf post-Christmas.

Continuing the 10th anniversary celebrations, Adidas hybrid Y-3 is unveiling its AW13 collection, dubbed “future thrift.”

If you’ve been wanting to look more stylish when hitting the gym or you fancy adding a sporty piece to your everyday attire this winter then look no more; the Y-3 AW13 campaign has arrived. From its recent Covent Garden store opening, the adidas hybrid continues the 10 years of futuristic sport with the “future thrift” collection, which is about imagining “how coming generations might mix elements of technology and tradition.”

Designed by the iconic Yohji Yamamoto, who describes it as “walking backward into the future”, the Y-3 collection echoes this future looking back at its past vision; Yamamoto’s avant-garde layered tailoring in conventional woven fabrics combines with athletic elements and futuristic synthetic materials. Graphic prints and pops of vibrant orange and green contrast against a dark colour palette of black, khaki and grey, with the signature three stripes peeping through in subtle appearances.

Shot in a creepy abandoned warehouse on Manhattan’s Lower East Side by Robbie Fimmano, dark, negative spaces allow the vivid elements of the collection to take prominence against the unadorned backdrop. The accompanying campaign video is a rather sinister affair with industrial imagery and mechanical dentist drill-like sound effects, and a digital clock reminding us time’s a ticking.

The original aim of Y-3 was to “elevate sportswear into something elegant and chic.” The AW13 collection does that, building a connection between the practical elements of sportswear and the sophistication and desirability of fashion pieces — basically, ridding the WAG in favour of the fashion diva. Check out the video below.

The Yohji Yamamoto and Adidas collaboration brand, Y-3, celebrates ten years with a store opening in Covent Garden yesterday.

Y3 Covent Garden_009LR

The collaboration between the award-winning Japanese designer and Adidas began in 2003 – and ten years on, the brand has become a favourite amongst celebs, including the likes of A$AP Rocky, Willow Smith and David Beckham. So if you’re rocking the balaclava-chic like A$AP or taking tips from a very cool 12-year-old, then Y-3 is the brand for you.

Inhabiting a renovated building originally built in 1838, the street-chic sanctuary is all futuristic, monochrome, mirror effects and mood lighting — pretty much how we picture Yamamoto’s bedroom to look like. It’s the brand’s second London store in collaboration with partner brand Hervia, alongside their flagship Central London store. The new branch will house the AW13 collection, carrying the full range of menswear, womenswear, footwear and accessories.

In keeping with Y-3’s approach, the store merges minimalist chic and techno-bling with a new lighting system that changes settings depending on the display — perfect for moody trend-setters and fickle fashionistas. But without getting too sci-fi, the store also keeps intact the building’s distinguishing Victorian features, such as its arch windows and steel pillars.

So why not head down to Covent Garden and hip hop into the new Y-3 store — if you fancy feeling like you’re in a sci-fi remake of American Psycho.

T-minus two days till bank holiday weekend and already wilting? Procrastinate with Y-3‘s interactive film, which lets you play at being director.

First there was the first shoppable music video. Then Westfield let you customise their lookbook films. Now Y-3 wants a piece of the sweet video action, and we think it’s one of the best efforts yet.

As this instructional video demonstrates, just hit the keys on your laptop to select film clips, your desired audio-visual effect and watch your 30 second masterpiece unfold. It’s like being an on set art director from the comfort of your office.

And if anybody at work asks what you’re doing, you can casually say, “Oh nothing, just art directing the new Y-3 campaign vid.” Classic. Head over to the Y-3 website to have a go.
