In celebration of Chanel’s latest collaboration with Baz Luhrmann, we take a stroll back through the brand’s best campaign films

This morning the latest Chanel No5 campaign dropped, this time starring the legend that is Gisele Bundchen, directed by master of romance Baz Luhrmann, the man behind Romeo and Juliet, the Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge. Six hours in and pushing 60,000 likes on Facebook, it already smells like another hit video. Soundtracked by a dreamy Lo-Fang cover of The One That I Want, a modern update on the Grease karaoke classic, and featuring Gisele on a Chanel surfboard this is up there with Chanel’s greatest advertising hits, mixing crisp modern finesse with the house’s eye for a vintage feel. Here’s the rundown of our favourite ever Chanel films:

No.5 THE FILM

It’s been ten years since Baz Luhrmann’s first film for Chanel, a fantastical epic starring Nicole Kidman that reportedly cost $42 million, and was the most glamourous ad of 2004, if not the decade. The image of Nicole, “the world’s most famous woman” running away with a stranger to sit on a giant Chanel sign wearing a giant pink gown is so unforgettably over the top.

THERE YOU ARE

That beard. That voice. Those eyes. This was the moment we became just a little bit more jealous of Angelina.

COCO MADEMOISELLE: THE FILM

Keira Knightley riding a motorbike through Paris to Joss Stone? Yes please. The classic Chanel woman (and Coco lookalike) ends up on a photoshoot where she gets very personal with the photographer. Mischievous, flirty and iconic.

ONCE UPON A TIME BY KARL LAGERFELD

An eighteen minute film, starring Keira Knightley (again), this one features Chanel’s early haters, hating on Coco’s first boutique. Shot in black and white with some French subtitles, Once Upon a Time is a classy affair. The best part is Knightley playing Coco Chanel, and taking absolutely no shit from anyone.

I LOVE CHANEL

A tribute to legendary 1950’s fashion photographer Erwin Blumenfeld, sound tracked by an epic Goldfrapp tune.

BLEU DE CHANEL, THE FILM

A short and sweet TV ad featuring the dreamy Gaspard Ulliel playing a brooding actor caught our attention back in 2010. Directed by Martin Scorcese with a Rolling Stones soundtrack it’s not just the good looking star that’s got us interested, although here’s hoping it’s repeated on TV again this year all the same.

TRAIN DE NUIT

Train de Nuit is the story of a chance encounter on a decadent night train to Istanbul, starring Audrey Tatou (also the star of Anne Fontaine’s Coco Before Chanel). On what looks like the holiday of a lifetime, she ends up getting with another very handsome Chanel gentleman. Jealous.

Located just outside of London, Farr is the perfect festival if you’re looking to stay close to the city, plus there is a Disco bus from the capital for all your transport requirements. As a boutique festival it offers an intimate setting with a string of emerging dj’s heading the bill along with bigger names like Waze & Odyssey and Detroit Swindle. Located in a deserted woodland, it’s the perfect festival for escaping the daily grind.

Angela Hill and David Owen chart their seven most elusive publications from the IDEA archive

Business partners and marrieds Angela Hill and David Owen – AKA IDEA Books – have cornered the market for supplying vintage, coveted and difficult-to-find magazine issues and photography books. Hill began trading years before the pair set up shop in a Brewer Street loft space, buying in curated books for famous couture house Colette in Paris after renting a west London flat with owner Sarah Lerfel. Now, IDEA source literary fare for Kenzo and Marc Jacobs stores worldwide, alongside booking private appointments with the likes of Bruce Weber and Joe McKenna. Hill talks Wonderland through seven of the IDEA archive.

1. SELF SERVICE, ISSUE 13

“I used to be a photographer and I just can’t use digital because my pictures wouldn’t come out how I want them to. I like my pictures to look like they’re film stills. Saying that, I love Terry Richardson’s stuff [and his work for Self Service, issue 13], so I can appreciate the clash of handmade things like this in a world where everything is digital.”

Steidl (August 15, 2013)

2. THE OFFICIAL SLOANE RANGER HANDBOOK: THE FIRST GUIDE TO WHAT REALLY MATTERS IN LIFE, ANN BARR AND PETER YORK

“I love Sloane culture, I love Peter York. It’s hilarious as well. It’s very well done in the writing and choice of imagery. It’s just superb: a real classic. It’s long been a favourite.”

Ebury Press, London (18 Oct 1982)

3. WOODY ALLEN’S PLAY IT AGAIN SAM, EDITED BY RICHARD J. ANOBILE

“Just brilliant; almost better than the film! A book of stills with the script: Diane Keaton looks amazing in it.”

Grosset & Dunlap; First Edition edition (1977)

rampling

4. CHARLOTTE RAMPLING, WITH COMPLIMENTS

“It’s made in 1981, and just has this look. You can see how much inspiration fashion designers and stylists have taken from it. Some pretty major designers have bought it. I just adore this book, it’s truly amazing.”

31_Paris_Texas

5. PARIS, TEXAS, WIM WENDERS AND SAM SHEPARD

“Stills from the film Paris, Texas – it’s so beautifully put together. It’s something about the colours – the way reds have come out in this is just amazing.”

Handmade Houses, Von der Kunst der neuen Zimmerleute Fricke (1977)

6. HANDMADE HOUSES, VON DER KUNST DER NEUEN ZIMMERLEUTE

“Just the most inspirational book from 1973. It was so popular when we put it on Instagram, because I think people like to dream. You can easily forget that there’s nature and wood and trees out there when you’re running around Soho going to appointments.”

7. ADORAE CURIEUX ZAMOK, PORTRAIT OF LITTLE GIRLS SERIES, BY GILLES MIMOUNI AND JEAN-PAUL DUMAS-GRILLET

“This is the most “Sunday” book of all, and is super scarce now. I grew up in London and always dreamed of being French. When my school did an exchange with a school in Troyes, I desperately tried to copy the French girls’ style… This is a wonderful book and has the look I was aiming for!”

Hachette; First Edition edition (1981)

Celebs love to get ghoulish, throw in some faux fangs, appear anaemic, tear a bloody T-shirt and blame a heavy night on maintaining an authentic Zombie look just as much as everyone else, non? What better way to raise a goblet to Halloween than to celebrate a selection of our favourite famous, frightful efforts.

1. Paris Hilton

Halloween 2013 has seen an abundance of stars mock up narcissistically as one another and the Hilton heiress snatches the crown for most current modified personality as she morphed into Miley, complete with manicured foam finger with only a seductive bear to cover any remaining modesty.

PARIS HILTON HALLOWEEN

2. Miley Cyrus

So Paris is being Miley and Miley is being heavyweight female rapper Lil’ Kim. Halloween is normally an excuse for everyone to wear as little clothing as possible and what with Miley’s recent antics we were surprised to see her covered up the most she’s been since her Montana days. The controversial pop princess who this year caused a media storm with her MTV VMA performance chose to reincarnate the disputed Queen of rap’s 1999 outfit from the very same awards. She’s just being Miley. G.O.I.

MILEY CYRUS HALLOWEEN 2013

3. Katy Perry

K-Pez and her BFF Shannon Woodward think outside of the tele-box and costume themselves as cartoon animation characters Daria and her friend Jane Lane. Strangely enough we think that this outfit wouldn’t look out of place in one of the ‘Roar’ singer’s videos with recent history shows her sporting an edible squirty-cream bra and a mouth retainer that is more fitted to Screech Powers. This also reminds us of the Ghost World cover.

KATY PERRY HALLOWEEN

4. Emma Roberts

Well she is in American Horror Story: Coven, so we’d expect Emma Roberts to embrace the haunting holiday more-so than anyone. Snapped here clutching onto boyfriend Evan Peters (more effort needed), we really enjoy how she’s borrowed Aunt Julia’s old hooker attire from 90’s blockbuster ‘Pretty Woman’ for last year’s Halloween embellishments, but we hear that this year she’s promised to indulge in cosplay dressed as Jazzercise Barbie. We expect a paused entrance which includes a downward dog, please.

Screen shot 2013-10-31 at 15.06.19

5. Heidi Klum.

The mother of dress-up, Heidi Klum is still brave enough to go for it solo since her split from Seal. The pair used to parade around in his’n’hers gorilla suits,  display attention to detail dressed as mechanical robots or simply just tog out in togas. Our favourite look from the supermodel/Fashion mogul is this Kali goddess garb which she sported at one of her annual Halloween bash’s. Previous creations have seen her  flaunt her audacity by fashioning Cleopatra and a Vampire Witch. If the invite doesn’t state a costume theme then we doubt Heidi will rear one of her many terrifyingly entertaining heads..

HEIDI KLUM HALLOWEEN

6. Adam Lambert

The 31 year old entertainer was spotted out in multiple looks this week in L.A, one of them being an amazing full-body bedazzled genie look. The ‘Let’s Dance‘ diva kept his flawless exterior image by smudging all visible flesh a luxurious aqua colour and ‘did a Kylie’ by concealing his crown jewels with a pair of shimmering gold hot-pants.

ADAM LAMBERT HALLOWEEN

7. Kate Moss & Jamie Hince

The always fashion-forward power couple threw their sartorial sense aside last year and spooked up to attend the star-studded scare fest hosted by Jonathan Ross, dressed as Morticia and Gomez Addams. We all know how much Kate is patron for a good party and we think she looks as glamorous as she normally does, even when she has been painted to look gaunt and half dead. Jamie takes on the role of Gomez perfectly enrobed in a burgundy fur trim jacket and signature moustache.

NicolaFormichetti-LadyGaga_ApplyingLipgloss_0073

1. Diesel: Full Throttle

Diesel named Formichetti their first artistic director back in April. The charismatic ex-Mugler designer and infamous Lady Gaga stylist will be responsible for a complete Diesel re-jig. Formichetti’s aesthetic won’t come to fruition until A/W ’14 , but his presence will be felt in time for this seasons New York Fashion Week… let’s hope that his influence doesn’t result in Diesel meat jeans.

Cara-Delevingne--1738408

2. It Girl: Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne’s spot at the top cannot be knocked. As part of the new wave of supermodel elites she continues to entice designers with her strong eyebrowlicious look. The ‘model of the moment’ has a huge social media following and who could blame them. Her humour and high energy on the catwalk is infectious. Check out her preview for Hogan SS’14 on Instagram…cheeky!

04-eva-chen

3. Instagram Queen: Eva Chen

Lucky Mag’s newly appointed edior-in-chief has a fashionista’s dream lifestyle. Instagram is her platform to vent her #TDF fashion loves and never ending collection of cosmetics, and they are oh so gorgeous! With countless followers, she is one to watch during NYFW..

4. From Alexander… to Aila Wang

Since taking the lead of Parisian Fashion House Balenciaga there is high excitement for Alexander Wang’s New York comeback collection. We see future potential here for a powerhouse fashion duo with his neice Aila. She’s the best dressed and cutest minor at Fashion Week. (That’s right I said minor!) Aila Wang is still a toddler, so we’ll have to hold off on that thought for now. She has become a front row figurehead at her uncle’s shows and we can’t wait to see what incredible outfit she pulls out of her wardrobe next. It’s not often we can be envious of a 4 year old, but this a definite exception!

5. Harper loves Bizarre

She has been labelled ‘the woman of mystery’ after appearing majestically at Fashion Weeks and high fashion events, but zany entrepreneur Michelle Harper is here to put outrageous fashion back on the map. Her blog is a revival of darling vintage and the hideously beautiful that she effortlessly manages to pull off. Can’t wait to see what this eccentric fashionista is going to showcase at NYFW.

jeff koons lee savage

6. Bright Young Savage

Bright young thing Lee Savage is stepping away from interiors and breaking into the fashion world with a collection of iconic innovative clutch bags. The New York-based accessories designer is reportedly inspired by corrugated cardboard, (though thankfully there is no cardboard in sight) the bags are all brass and lined with a gorgeous leather. Savage is definitely a designer to watch out for this season if you’re looking for quirky evening glam.

7. Moncler Get Lucky

Pharrell Williams has announced a sunglasses collab with French fashion label Moncler — could this be any more fab? No, we think not! Pharell is going to model the advertising campaign and looking at the preview images these sunnies are outrageously avant-garde covering two thirds of producer turned designer’s gorgeous face. They are set to be released at the end of September but we’re hoping for a sneaky preview during Fashion week, so keep watching!

With The LCF opening an exhibition tomorrow of Coco Chanel portraits by Marion Pike, we look back at the seven ways the designer revolutionised women’s fashion.

marion-pike-vogue-2-5aug13-pr_b-387x581

Arguably the most influential fashion designer of all time, Coco Chanel revolutionised the way women wore clothes and paved a new way for the fashion brand, capitalising on the changing times she was living in and her status as a fashion icon. With The London College of Fashion opening an exhibition of portraits of the designer painted by her friend and artist Marion Pike on tomorrow, Wonderland looks back on seven ways the designer changed the course of fashion history.

7WondersCocoChanelWomen's Trousers

1. Trousers For Women

Although during the war women often had to wear trousers when working in traditionally male jobs, Chanel played a huge part in accelerating their popularity as a fashion item. While at the society beach resort of Deauville she chose to wear sailor’s pants instead of a swimming costume to avoid exposing herself, and the style spread quickly as her legions of followers emulated her. In the end, the designer regretted how her careless decision affected the course of fashion history. Aged 86 she said: “I came up with them by modesty.  From this usage to it becoming a fashion, having 70% of women wearing trousers at evening dinner is quite sad.”

7WondersCocoChanelSuntan

2. Suntan

At the start of the 20th century, pale was in— skin that was in any way brown was associated with the lower classes. In 1923 Chanel made suntan a covetable fashion accessory when she accidently got sunburned while on a cruise on the French Riviera. On her return to Paris, her peers greatly admired her dark glow and quickly followed suit. The tan became a sign of wealth and beauty, a trend that has had lasting effects. By default, you could say we have her to thank for sun beds, streaky fake tan and orange hands too.

7WondersCocoChanelJersey

3. Jersey

Chanel was the first designer to use jersey, which at the time was reserved for men’s underwear. Simple, practical and comfortable, the fabric was the complete antithesis of what women’s clothing had previously been: flashy, excessive and based around an uncomfortable corset. This choice of material was also one of necessity: the war had resulted in a short supply of more expensive fabric, and early in her career it was an affordable option to buy in bulk.

7WondersCocoChanelChanelNo5

4. Branded Perfume

In 1921 Chanel No. 5 was launched, the first scent that smelt deliberately artificial. It was made of unnatural ingredients, unlike the standard perfumes of the day, which were created with floral components. Although Paul Poiret was the first fashion house with its own scent, the designer missed a trick by declining to put his name on the bottle. Chanel ingeniously put hers on No.5, spreading the brand to a whole new market. Fast forward 90 years later and most major fashion labels worth their salt have their own scent, with perfume profits often exceeding those of the apparel.

7WondersCocoChanelCostume Jewellery

5. Costume Jewellery

Again it was Paul Poiret who first used costume jewellery in his collections, but when Chanel introduced fake large pearls and glittering gemstones the trend really began to take off. Combining the real with the fake, the extravagant bling was the perfect accompaniment to her minimalist clothes. The designer thought it best to have a pile of imitation jewels then to stick to one or two expensive real ones, and her wealthy customers agreed. Although there was a market for fake jewellery previously, it was reserved for those who couldn’t afford the real deal.

7WondersCocoChanelBlack Dress

6. The Little Black Dress

It’s hard to imagine a world without black as a foolproof outfit colour choice, but before Chanel the colour was reserved for funerals and widows in mourning. The fashionable reds, green and electric blues that her peers dressed in made the designer “feel ill.” “These colours are impossible,” she declared. “These women, I’m bloody well going to dress them in black!” In 1926, Vogue published a sketch of her calf-length simple black sheath and labelled it a “frock that all the world would wear”. A wardrobe staple was born.

7WondersCocoChanelThe Chanel Suit

7. The Chanel Suit

The designer was one of the first to borrow from menswear for women’s attire when she created her iconic suits. Consisting of a collarless boxy wool jacket with braid trim, fitted sleeves and metallic embellished buttons with accompanying slimline skirt, the outfit was the perfect choice for the post-war woman who was trying to build a career in the male-dominated workplace. The suit was favoured by celebrities like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, and made its mark on history when Jackie Kennedy wore it on the day her husband was assassinated.

The ‘Coco Chanel: A New Portrait by Marion Pike, Paris 1967-1971’ exhibition opens tomorrow at the LCF Fashion Space Gallery.
