The Nomad Explorer

Ever wondered what you’d wear as an intrepid style-conscious explorer while voyaging across the hot and unforgiving desert landscape? It would look something like Belstaff SS16: a combination of sand-beaten beiges, soft worn leathers and light outerwear that does not compromise on style in order to achieve practical comfort. With technical geometrics refining Belstaff parkas and bombers jackets, the collection see’s the concept of the British desert explorer developed with a new-age relevance.

Mirage in the city

From revitalising in an army tent with Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast providing a noteworthy backdrop, we were transported to a distant land of desert sand and endless dune landscapes upon stepping inside the Old Billingsgate Market. With a nod to Belstaff’s motoring and military heritage, a desert jeep and bike completed the wayfaring adventurer experience.

Lawrence of Arabia

As a supplier to the British Forces of yonder year, Belstaff SS16 keeps in touch with its history and its strong military influence in order to put together a collection that pays homage to the age of the Desert Rats. Explorers new and old have been known to wear the brand – from Lawrence of Arabia back in the 1930’s, to the present day Levison Wood who Belstaff created a customised explorer jacket for SS16. This season notes an uprooting of the archives and revival of the Belstaff classics while all the while keeping the timeless trademark look at the heart of the collection.

Courtesy of Frederik Dyhr, we’ve got a playlist and a shopping list in conjunction with the release of motorcycle movie, “The Greasy Hands Preachers”.

Directed by Clement Beauvais and Arthur De Kersauson, The Greasy Hands Preacher” is a documentary film partnered with luxury lifestyle brand Belstaff. Hollywood heartthrob Orlando Bloom was the executive producer of the flick, a motorbike movie delving into the lives of its protagonists, bikers of all forms, from racers to mechanics, and their pursuit of adventure.

Their dedication, borderline obsession, is evident in the way these under-the-radar characters modify their lives around their motorcycles. One man explains, “I have to improve my inner-self to produce better bikes”. It’s not all about the bikes, don’t worry if you don’t know your Harley Davidsons from your Rokons, it’s more about the journey of this subculture that is constantly on the road, perfecting the art of working with their hands.

The Vice President of Men’s Design, Frederik Dyhr has curated us a ‘Road Trip’ playlist to keep you inspired long after you’ve watched the film and has hand-picked his top moto picks from the latest collection.

The Sonics – “Have Love, Will Travel”

The Stooges – “No Fun”

John Lennon – “Working Class Hero”

Billy Bragg – “New England”

The Ravonettes – “Heart of Stone”

The Who – “I Can’t Explain”

The Kinks – “Nothing In This World”

The LFW madness is over, for now. Here, we chart the best bits from AW15 to see what we’ll be wearing after the summer.

A-8

Whether you’ve hung up this season’s most outrageous outfit or jumped on the next plane to Milan, the dust and glitter leftover from LFW is just beginning to settle. It’s unlikely that you’ll forget the best moments from the AW15 shows but we’ve listed our top seven just to make sure. You can thank us when you’re back from Paris.

Shouty Slogans

Z81A0075

Ashley Williams was serving up truth with her patches. “Improve your image, be seen with me,” words anyone wearing the new collection can say wholeheartedly. Ashish’s “SEX” jumper will certainly sell, proving the saying true and Sophia Webster’s never-fail clutches were adorned with messages of “Touch my Clutch” and our favourite piece from her was the “Sexy Back” backpack. Simple, effective, cute.

Furry Friends

SHRIMPS-3889

Obviously, for AW, fur was everywhere. Our favourites were of the patchwork variety at Ashish or on the hems of latex macs at Sibling (is there some sort of waiting list we need to be on for one of those btw?). The cutest was faux and worn on the Martian models at Shrimps, with their selection of fluff trimmed peep toes, striped coats and petal shaped clutches. Vibrantly coloured, utterly dreamy and probably softer than the real bunnies at Marcus Lupfer.

Street Walkers

A-2

Ashish made it ok for us to wear hooker boots, whether they’re PVC, lace-up, platformed, or all three. Over at Fyodor Golan they came in thigh-high baby pink patent styles, whilst Ed Marler took on a trashy tone too with his laced trousers and his models worked it in the highest energy show of the season with one of the best set designs and soundtracks too.

Boho is Back

Burberry-Womenswear-Autumn_Winter-2015-Collection-Look-1-726x1024

Tassels and fringing galore were on show at Burberry and Temperley. Temperley luxed it up with jewel colours and sequins whereas Burberry stuck to the classic 70s earth tones, suede and florals. Topshop Unique also snuck into retro territory with au naturel hair, high necklines, shearling and the sweetest dandelion prints and embroidery, not to forget Paul Smith’s mustard shearling number, sure to be a favourite when autumn comes rolling in.

Gothic Girls

TU-8

Vivienne Westwood always has something dark or devilish and this season was no exception with Rollacoaster cover girl Daisy Lowe taking to the catwalk in a hip hugging black lace gown, with scary almost industrial neck chains to up the ante. Giles was the real goth girl collection though with pieces straight out of a fairytale. Exaggerated bows, ruffs and dominatrix PVC gave the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary and black slick lips teamed with french plaited hair combined girlishness and witch-chic.

Pretty in Pink

Z81A0278

It’s a tried, old and untrue stereotype that’s blue’s for boys and pink’s for girls but you would have taken it as gospel at LFW. Every shade of blush, petal, peach, magenta and even Pepto Bismol was on show just about everywhere. House of Holland, Ashley Williams, Simone Rocha and Sibling skirted around the saccharine with PVC and latex infused collections whereas Molly Goddard embraced the fluff and frills of the colour with her dreamy fairytale tulle creations.

One of the Boys

Z81A9486-682x1024

No nonsense was had at Margaret Howell, Paul Smith, Belstaff or Joseph. Clean lines, wintry colour palettes and heavy focus on shirts, coats and tailoring at all three brands made a more masculine trio of collections. Loose cuts at Paul Smith will make everything look like you borrowed it from your boyfriend or your brother, in a good way, that is.

Footballer-turned-model-turned-philanthropist, it seems David Beckham is not retiring his spot in the forefront of the public eye anytime soon, (and may have even caught the designing bug from his wife, Victoria).

The flirtation between Beckham and Belstaff began a few years ago in a mission to find a cool biker jacket, found within a moto classic from Belstaff, “I have worn it ever since”, says Beckham.

The capsule collection, launched exclusively online from today, comprises of ten pieces that are inspired by motorbike leathers, including jackets, trousers, tshirts and shoes. Far from a typical member of the ‘Hells Angels’, preened Beckham  has created designs to epitomise vintage riding gear. The usual suspects appear in the form of quilting details, studs and elbow patches, with an added touch of David, seen within the elegant finishes, softened lines and muscle-hugging silhouette. British iconography is also alluded to as the colour palette features muted flecks of the same navy blue found within the Union Jack (a firm favourite with the brand).

Other aspects of 90-year-old Belstaff’s traditional British parentage are not forgotten, but simply modernised, made all the more desirable with a celebrity name preceding the collection. With design features dating back to their establishment, found in the choice of waterproof fabrics and brushed hardware, Beckham stays true to the brand he respects and admittedly collects.

As smouldering as he looked in that Calvin Klein advert, the retired footballer can be seen modelling his own designs, and previous collections for Belstaff, in tender black and white photography that captures the mood of a rugged adventurer succinctly.

Belstaff release a short film for their Spring Summer 2014 campaign featuring David Beckham.

When it was initially announced that Beckham would become the new face of Belstaff he caused some what of a stir, in fact it resulted in the entirety of Bond St being shut down so that David and his ‘band of brothers’ could make their dramatic entrance all on motorbikes.
Belstaff have now released a short film featuring a brooding Beckham riding through British fields on a motorcycle, again with his band of brothers. The beautiful countryside is disrupted by Beckham and co, offset by the grit, noise & exuberance of friends with a shared thirst for adventure.
Check out the video below.
