It is always a good idea to put a couple of hours aside for the Relative MO press day, which was yesterday at Somerset House. On-route there was a commotion: a BT fire meaning roads around the Piccadilly area were blocked off to traffic, and our mobile phones were temporarily unavailable. Nightmare.
First we were let into the accessories room. Dominic Jones created a ‘Monster Jones’ (pictured above), made from shark, crocodile, vulture, bat and porcupine bones. He created it the night before: “I buy dead things off the internet.” All research for his collection, which is based around vultures for A/W10-11.
Charlotte Olympia also showed her collection, with new Perspex bags (bottom left). She is soon to be opening a shop around the Conduit Street area, Dom will be designing the door knobs.
The Nina Peter gloves (bottom right) also stood out. The ones pictured are made from salmon skin. And they actually smelt a bit fishy. Really.
Good news for Erdem, he is the first winner of British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund Award. Next season he will have £200, 000 to play with and access to high-profile mentors all to assist him in growing his brand globally. He has already dressed Sarah Brown and Michelle Obama, mind. His beautiful A/W10-11 collection below.
Emilio (de la Morena) is adorable. He talked us through his collection (below), holding up his favorite piece that is leather leopard hand-sewn onto organza. The prints carried through the collection are of what he imagines different planets, on the solar system, to look.
Julien Macdonald cheekily took inspiration from Jilly Cooper’s eyebrow-raising Riders novels. The coat is cut like origami, and the boots shaped like a horse’s hoof. There is also lots of his trademark cobweb knit.
Alice holds up one of Preen’s husband, note - not boyfriend, jacket (below). Also love their rose print dresses, which carry punchy details such as canary yellow back straps, and fine black layers. Totally gutted the private view is done and dusted.
You can count on something interesting to try on in the John Galliano room, this time it is an Afro hat.
Markus Lupfer is selling SO well. So for A/W10-11 he has added a few more details to the collection, including more tailoring.
Menswear designer Aitor Throup has done a retrospective of his trousers - three pictured below. Selfridges and Barney’s have selected him to decorate their windows for two seasons. He has also designed the English football teams away kit, for this approaching World Cup.
