Ulterior have been a busy band over the past year. They’ve been recording new music, wowing crowds on their support tour of The Sisters Of Mercy, and watching Ace Ventura’s 1 and 2. With a new single out – featuring a b-side of crowd pleasing live tune Aporia – Simmons and MCG from the band gave us these answers to our questions.
Wonderland: Describe your music in five words.
Ulterior: Suicide Manic Roses of Mercy… well, according to some lazy journos at other magazines, anyway.
W: Where do you find inspiration for making your music?
U: Mainly from listening to other music. Sometimes we might be inspired to write by something going on in our personal lives, but most of the time its seeing what other bands have achieved, and set out to better it, I guess.
W: You’ve already toured all over Europe, where is your favourite place to perform?
U: So far, we would have to say the Coliseum in Lisbon, when we were supporting the Sisters of Mercy in March. Its like the Portuguese version of the Albert Hall and was full with two thousand music fans. Was a great privilege to play our music in a place like that.
W: What music did you have playing on your tour bus?
U: Bowie, Big Black, Nirvana, Suede, Alan Vega, The Cult, Manics, the Sisters of Mercy… There was a DVD player too but we only had Ace Ventura 1 and 2.
W: What has been your wildest gig?
U: We used to get into all sorts of weird trouble when we first started out. There was one show in a railway archway that included a guitar being smashed to pieces, two fights and a night in a police cell. The people in the audience seemed to think it was all part of the show, went crazy and tried to storm the stage. They’ve not invited us back…
W: Where is your favourite place to hang out?
U: Sat on the street corner outside our studio in Hackney, with a couple of beers, after we’ve spent a day in the studio writing or rehearsing. No Lindsey Lohan fun and games for us… Yet
W: Who would you most want to collaborate with?
U: There’s a few on the wish list. Top ones would have to be Alan Vega, Bobby Gillespie, David Bowie and Andrew Eldritch. And Matt from A.R.E. Weapons on a sax solo!
W: What would you be doing if you weren’t making music?
U: Back in the gutter under some chicken bones no doubt.
W: Your single is called Sister Speed, what would you do if you could be a girl for a day?
U: There’s no way you print what I want to write!!!
Ulterior’s new single, Sister Speed, is out today on DiscError Records.
