FLAWLESS

bbc1

When hype surrounds a band to hysterical levels, it can be disappointing when the end result doesn’t match the fanfare. Fortunately Bombay Bicycle Club didn’t disappoint when they released their debut album, I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose, last summer. As something of a reward to their fans, the band have produced Flaws – not quite a new album, but an acoustic EP of old and new tracks aimed as a bit of a bonus to last years debut. We Q+A Suren de Saram, drummer and backing vocalist from the band, to find out about the new record, summer plans and eating curry.

WONDERLAND: Describe your music in five words
Suren de Saram: Electronic and folk-tinged indie

What influences you when making a record?
Just life and our experiences really. We’re quite young and quite down-to-earth. A lot of the songs on the first album are about pretty typical teenage things. When we’re not doing band stuff now we just hang out with our old school friends. Obviously we’re not teenagers any more so I expect the second proper album will be a bit less angsty, but it will still be influenced by experiences from our normal everyday lives.

Who had the worst record collection when you were at school?
Probably me. I’m pretty sure I would have had the weirdest anyway. It would probably have been a mixture of jazz and classical CDs, some Now compilations, some Offspring albums and maybe some Britney Spears singles.

How did Flaws come about?
We’ve always had that side to us. We’re interested in and play lots of different kinds of music. Jack writes a lot of “acoustic” songs. Before Flaws we had only ever really used acoustic songs as B-sides to singles, but we decided that that wasn’t really doing them justice and there was enough material to make a nice little album, which is how Flaws came about. Flaws was recorded in a very low-key way. The majority of it was done in Jack’s [Steadman, vocals] bedroom.

You’ve been touring a lot recently – what have been the highlights?
There have been quite a few…going to Japan for the first time in December was really exciting. We were only there for three or four days but we tried to make the most of it. We had a headlining gig at KOKO soon after when we were back in London and I think that was one of the most memorable gigs we’ve ever done for all of us. We had the London School of Samba come on and play with us for the encore…it was a really great moment. The NME tour in February was also a good laugh. It was a lot of fun touring around with three other bands and everyone, bands and crew, was really friendly.

You’re doing a few festivals this year too – are you looking forward to any in particular?
Probably Glastonbury the most. We played there last year for the first time and it was pretty amazing. We all camped for the whole weekend. We have a good slot on the John Peel Stage on Friday this year. Unfortunately I couldn’t stay for the weekend this time as it was my sister’s wedding on the Saturday!

What music do you listen to on the tour bus?
Depends what mood we’re in really. I remember us listening to the Strokes album all the way through on a couple of tours. If we’re in more of a party mood we might put on some electro. On one of our recent tours in Europe we had a two day drive to get to Italy and so we bought a Garage Classics compilation at a service station to relieve the boredom. It had some pretty banging tunes on it but unfortunately we found out our tour manager has a deep hatred for garage.

Are there any bands you would want to collaborate with?
Probably someone from a completely different musical world to us…I don’t know. It would be cool to work with the London School of Samba again.

Have you ever eaten at Indian restaurant chain, Bombay Bicycle Club?
Yeah, they invited us for a free meal when they found out about us. The food’s delicious. The portions are a bit on the small side but it’s very tasty.

What is the band’s favourite type of food? Are there any food/drinks you would demand (diva style) to have backstage for gigs?
We like lots of different kinds of foods - Indian, Chinese, Japanese… We used to go for Indian or Chinese buffets right before gigs but we usually ended up feeling ill on stage so we don’t really do that any more. In fact we had to delay going on stage once because one of us was being sick after we’d gone to a Chinese buffet. We all like sushi too. There is a really good sushi place around the corner from where we rehearse so we go there a lot. We went through a period of asking for sushi on our rider…that’s the most extravagant thing I can think of.

TOUCHED BY A SUPERSTAR

Har Mar Superstar, a.k.a Sean Tillmann, has thrilled crowds the world over with his sexually charged performances and next week returns to inject ecstatic delight into the dance feet and underwear of the British public with his Dark Touches tour.  Wonderland talks to the singing sensation to find out where he has been in the five years since his last album, and what we can expect from the upcoming tour.

Wonderland:  Describe your music in five words
Har Mar Superstar:  Brutal, sexual, amazing, rhythm + blues

W:  Dark Touches is your first album in a few years – have you missed the music scene?
HMS:  I have been making a lot of music with other projects like Sean Na Na and Neon Neon.  Even if I didn’t do all of that I would never miss the music scene… or any scene for that matter.

W:  What were your influences for the new album?
HMS:  I was influenced by vodka, weed, Lost, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and sleep for Dark Touches.

W:  And indeed, is there a particular person you would like to “touch”?
HMS:  I bet you’d like to know so you could make it the headline of the article.  OK.  Here goes… I want to touch God.

W:  According to Wikipedia, you wrote Tall Boy for Britney Spears but she turned it down – would you ever want to duet with her?
HMS:  Of course I’d want to duet with her, are you crazy?  That would rule.  Anyone who can take that much abuse and come out on top the better person rules in my book.  Plus Slave 4 U and Toxic are truly amazing jams.

W:  You have collaborated with various people already – who were the highlights and who else would you like to collaborate with?
HMS:  I’d like to collaborate with Kylie at some point.  Also, Mike Patton.  I’ve had a lot of good times in the studio with a lot of great people, but I’d rather look ahead than behind.

W:  You’re also in Drew Barrymore’s film, “Whip It” – did you enjoy the experience of making the film and will you be involved in more films in future?
HMS:  Whip It was amazing to be a part of.  It was just a lot of fun girls getting wild on roller skates.  I don’t think it could get any better than that.  I plan to appear everywhere all of the time, so more films are definite.

W:  You’re touring the UK from the end of the month – where are you most looking forward to performing?
HMS:  I think the only place I haven’t been on this next tour is Carlisle.  Let’s see what happens there.  I’m excited.  The UK is a second home of sorts, so I’m excited to get back to everywhere.  I have to say I get really excited when I drive into Scotland.  Edinburgh and Glasgow will be amazing.  I also love London (duh), Brighton, and Cardiff.

W:  Winter is upon us – can we still expect to see you on stage in just your pants and socks?
HMS:  We’ll see.  I did just get over swine flu.  H1N1 is brutal.  I guess I’m invincible now, so I don’t see why I wouldn’t party in my underwear.

W:  You seem to have a knack of making out with a high proportion of your watching crowd – can we expect similar results from the new tour?
HMS:  It depends how bad people want it.  They have to be into but not desperate.  That always feels wrong to me… like I’m stealing someone’s virginity.  Actually now that I read it on paper it sounds amazing.

Har Mar Superstar’s current album Dark Touches is out now.  His UK tour starts on Sunday the 29th November at the Oxford O2 Academy.  Full tour details and tickets are available here.

THIS IS YOUR WAKE UP CALL

00070_118

Having been described as France’s response to Mika, super charged, super happy, pop boy wonder, Sliimy is about to make his voice heard all over the UK with the release of his debut single, Wake Up.  Already a huge success in France (his debut album charted in above Coldplay and Bat For Lashes) and with a cheeky cover of Britney Spears’ Womanizer on YouTube elevating him to ‘internet sensation’ status, Sliimy’s catchy and near fluorescent tunes are sure to give fans of candy pop a sugar hit equivalent to a pan au chocolat dipped in La Maison.

Wonderland:  Describe your music in five word?
Sliimy:  Funny, happy, melancholy, instantaneously, true.

W:  Your single is called Wake Up.  How do you wake up in the morning?
S:  With some music and lots of slices of bread and Nutella.

W:  You have famously covered Britney Spears’ ‘Womanizer’, are you a fan of Miss Spears?
S:  I used to love some of her songs, because you can easily have the song in your mind all day.  It’s funny and pop.

W:  What other songs would you like to cover?
S:  Why not Girls & Boys by Blur?  I love this song.

W:  Who would you most like to collaborate with?
S:  Mark Ronson because I love his work.

W:  Who or what has been your biggest influence in making music?
S:  Everyday life is the biggest influence, because you’re always surprised by the events.

W:  You have already experienced massive success in France.  What do you find different about performing to a British crowd?
S:  It’s exciting because there’s a different culture and different way of life so it’s enriching to see the way that people react.

W:  What has been your wildest gig to date?
S:  One day in Lyon, we played without sound because the surrounding walls were broken.  That was weird but a great and funny experience.

W:  French kissing, French knickers or French fries?
S:  A big French kiss and after, some French fries. Miam !

W:  How do you like to relax?
S:  When I’m hanging out with my friends I’m in peace and serenity.

Sliimy’s single Wake Up is out today on Warner UK.
