The Met Gala is, as one enthusiast describes it, the “Super Bowl” for all things fashion and pop culture. For one night a year, the biggest names in entertainment, the most coveted designers, a handful of politicians, athletes, and activists, and the one and only Anna Wintour converge under one roof — travelling from across the globe to partake in an evening of true New York City glamour. With the event limiting guests’ photography usage inside, it is the red carpet that has become the main attraction — with viewers tuning in from all time zones to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars in avant garde interpretations of the year’s specific dress code.

But this year, as everyone’s eyes were glued to the car doors and carpet entrance, photographer Jamie Pearl turned around. Capturing the vibrant energy of the crowds that gather outside of the event — from fashion students to pop culture aficionados — she spent the evening documenting the Met Gala superfans for Wonderland.
