Truth be told: there’s no such thing as being a teenager and not dreaming of marrying a rockstar. It just feels natural; at some point in life, you did think the One Direction boys were writing those lyrics for you. Or Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, or your favourite Jonas Brother. Eventually, though, we come to the understanding that love is probably easier to be found in the trenches of a dating app — and that rockstars can barely see you pretending to play it cool in the front row of their concerts, trying to lead a love-to-hate-you story. Unless, of course, you are Anne Hathaway.

The queen of rom-coms is once again back on our screens to feed our ultimate childhood fantasies, starring side by side with Red, White & Royal Blue heartthrob Nicholas Galitzine in Robinne Lee’s soon-to-be-released coming-of-age story, The Idea Of You. But the story isn’t just another romance. The Idea Of You is a fanfic-infused story, following the developments of a love-at-first-sight dynamic between Sophie (Solène, in the book), a 40-year-old Silver Lake art gallery owner and divorcée, and August Moon, the superstar her daughter used to be obsessed with in seventh grade.

And according to the internet reactions, a silly-in-love kinda film is exactly what we all needed. To get you in the mood ahead of the release — on May 2nd, as an Amazon Prime Exclusive — here’s a roundup of 5 other fanfic-worthy films and series to binge-watch in the meantime.

The Kissing Booth

Joey King, Jacob Elordi, and Joel Courtney — what could possibly go wrong here? Netflix’s production The Kissing Booth is already a classic in the coming-of-age love-drama genre. But its roots go back to 2012, when 17-year-old writer Beth Reekles used to post her novels on Wattpad. The storyline follows a classic late bloomer teenage girl, Elle (played by King), who falls in love with the high school bad boy, Noah (Elordi). However, things get complicated when Lee (Courtney), her lifelong best friend and Noah’s little brother, enters the equation. With three parts available for streaming, it’s a full plate for a Sunday afternoon binge-watch session.

After

While The Idea of You denies any speculation that its story may have been influenced by Harry Styles, After is actually adapted from a One Direction fan fiction itself. Originally written by Anna Todd (Imaginator1D on Wattpad) back in 2014 as an “alternate universe” fanfic surrounding Styles — cleverly renamed to Hardin Scott — the story follows good-girl Tessa to university, where she meets a mysterious bad-boy who makes her question what she wants out of her picture-perfect life. Sappy and predictable — just as all good fanfic should be.

My Life with the Walter Boys

Ever dreamed of leaving your high stress city life behind to move into a house full of boys in small town Colorado? Well, you can watch it play out on Netflix. Based on Ali Novak’s 2014 Wattpad novel — 2014 was a busy year on the website — it follows a recently-orphaned teenage girl, Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez), as she moves away from Manhattan and into the Walters’ house of seven sons and one daughter. She quickly finds herself caught in a love triangle between, you guessed it, two of the sons. Already renewed for a second season, My Life with the Walter Boys is a must for all fanfic fans.

The Summer I Turned Pretty

Another incredible brother-vs-brother love triangle — reminiscent of The Vampire Diaries before it and My Life with the Walter Boys which followed — The Summer I Turned Pretty was an instant success. Based not on a Wattpad story but on Jenny Han’s trilogy of the same name, the show premiered the summer of 2022, with a second season out the following year. When a teenage Belly (Lola Tung) pulls up with her brother and mother to the beach house they spend every summer at with her mother’s best friend and her two sons, Jeremiah and Conrad, it is clear that the summer is going to be unlike any other. Both boys notice how much she’s changed over the year, and Belly undergoes a coming-of-age journey, figuring out her complicated feelings for a boy she’s always had a crush on and one who keeps surprising her. Luckily, it’s been renewed for a third — so we’ll have all the answers on what happens next!

Through My Window

Looking for a bit of steam? Then this might be the one for you. Through My Window, originally published in Spanish as Através de Mi Ventana, is a story of obsession, intense sexual tensions, and the blurred lines between love and passion, written by Ariana Godoy. Brought to Netflix in 2022, the three-part movie follows the story of Raquel (Clara Galle), a teenage novelist, and her rich neighbour, Ares Hidalgo (Julio Peña), a boy she’s been obsessed with since her early teenage days. It’s a classic prohibited and toxic love dynamic, drenched in drama and teenage hormones.
