PIAGET POLO 79

The Swiss Maison returns with the Piaget Polo 79 Bringing Decadence Back to the Modern Day.

They say if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. But every now and then, there’s an exception to the rule and Piaget’s all-new Polo confirms exactly why we should be revisiting old classics. If you’re unfamiliar with the OG model, then let us unravel the history lesson for you.

Piaget totally redefined what it means to wear a sports watch back in the 70s, with diversification of the genre, prompting a focus on elegant sports watches that today you might mistake for more design-focused and jewellery inspired timepieces. Emblematic of the hedonism and decadence of the era, Yves Piaget birthed the Piaget Polo to the masses, dubbed the ‘world’s ultimate sports watch,’ in an alluring gold, merging the worlds of athleticism and style like never before. ’

An icon of its time, Piaget launched the Polo model in quartz in 1976, with the thinnest quartz movement in the world at the time. With such popular demand, it evolved into iterations that were round, square and gem-set, fusing shock-resistance and waterproofing in a luxury manner, (fitting from the the founder who felt at home in Manhattan’s Studio 54 and the Polo Clubs of Palm Beach.)

“First and foremost, a Piaget is not simply a watch, but a piece of jewellery whose main purpose is to radiate beauty,” shares Piaget devotee, Raffael Frenner. “Prestigious brand names and fancy marketing phrases alone are not enough to make a watch desirable in the long-run. It takes more than that. Especially now, when we see so many soulless, butchered reissues of glorious vintage models among modern watches, the desire for originality is on the rise.”

Instead, people want individualit and the unexpected, traits wholly welcomed with the resurgence of the Piaget Polo this year, confirming the brand’s understanding of the zeitgeist. “Nobody did it quite like them back in the days. They have a unique character,” shares vintage watch collector, Arthur Pfister. “Unlike other brands, you’ll never stop being surprised and seeing a new creation from them. There’s so much to discover.”

As the Piaget Polo returns – dubbed the Piaget Polo 79 – you can now get your hands on a mechanical movement, instead of its former quartz counterpart, in an energised 38mm, gaining 4mm on the original. And in an industry where every millimetre matters, this 18 karat gold model proves that you can revisit the history books without the need of looking back, rather looking forward to what’s next.

Befitting with the vintage surge that’s dominating the watch world right now, you could say the revival of the Piaget Polo, in line with the brand’s 150th anniversary, couldn’t have come at a better time. With newcomers to the industry sparking interest in all things that tick (we welcome you with open arms), Piaget proves to be the perfect symbiosis of what we Gen Z consumers want: individuality and fun.
