NEW NOISE: MAGA

We sit down with the French artist and Scenarios co-founder to chat through his relationship with long-time collaborator, Emanuel Satie, and his latest projects.

Following the widespread global success of their Beatport chart-topping collaboration ‘Sleepless’ alongside Sean Doron back in November, long-time studio partners and Scenarios label mates Maga and Emanuel Satie now look further afield, as they land on Frau Blau with their nostalgic new acid house offering ‘Love Accelerator’. Out now via the long-standing Tel Aviv-based imprint, Love Accelerator marks Maga and Satie’s first release of 2024 and is the first track on Frau Blau’s ‘Friends V’ VA compilation.

A delectable slice of raw, intricately textured house music, Maga and Emanuel’s expert treatment of digital instrumentation, analogue synthesisers and punchy four-to-the-flour drums delivers in spades. Tempering acid house-inspired vocal samples with old-school euphoria, cascading pads and driving basslines throughout, this latest partnership from the two Lisbon-based producers is yet another remarkable addition to their expansive catalogues.

A staple in both artists’ live performances over the past few months, Emanuel and Maga’s ability to captivate listeners with their forward-thinking, ever-evolving sound experiment is second-to-none. Pairing adventurous, electronic sound design with imaginative production techniques and familiar tones, their output is continuously developing as they add new textures and layers to their collaborative hallmark; pushing their own creative boundaries each step of the way.

We sat down with Maga to find out more…

Hey Maga! You and Emanuel Satie have been long-time collaborators and studio partners, how did you first start working together?

Hey there! Emanuel Satie and I have indeed been close friends and collaborators for a few years now. Our journey together started when we met through mutual connections in the music industry. We instantly hit it off, both sharing a passion for melodic house and techno. We started working together in the studio, experimenting with our sound and exploring new musical ideas. It was a natural fit and our creative synergy continues to fuel our collaborations on our label, Scenarios.

How does the Lisbon scene influence your music? What is the scene like for emerging artists?

I am the founder of event series called ‘Stories’. Having that happen regularly and knowing your local crowd is definitely something look forward each time I return to it. The scene is growing and a lot of international artists have moved In Lisbon, which I believe is a great thing for the people of the industry.

Your 2023 collaboration, ‘Sleepless’, gained significant success. Did you approach the creation and style of ‘Love Accelerator’ differently?

We aimed for a stronger and more raw sound, with a focus on a hefty bassline that gives the track a vibrant and continuous energy. It was a deliberate shift to create a distinct and powerful experience for our audience.

You describe the track as a ‘nostalgic new acid house offering’. How did you maintain a contemporary sound whilst staying true to acid house?

‘Love Accelerator’ as a ‘nostalgic new acid house offering’ was a deliberate choice. To maintain a contemporary sound while staying true to acid house, we strategically incorporated elements like the vocal entry during the break and the impactful snare roll. This combination, which is a hallmark in many modern house records, not only adds an energetic drive but also serves as a bridge between the nostalgic acid house vibes and the current musical landscape. It’s about blending the timeless essence of acid house with the dynamic elements that resonate with today’s audience.

How do you feel ‘Love Accelerator’ translates to a live setting?

The crowd’s response has been incredible, with the track emerging as a potent dance floor weapon. When you hear the crowd’s enthusiastic reaction — that ‘uhh’ moment — it perfectly encapsulates the energy and impact we aimed for when creating the track. It’s immensely gratifying to witness the audience connecting with the music in the way we envisioned during its production.
