NSJ MALI

We connect with the Kennington-born rapper and creative to discuss his incendiary debut EP.

Exploring the multi-dimensional sound waves of South London, NSJ Mali is one of the big up-and-coming names in the UK rap scene to watch out for — and now, he unveils his newest musical endeavour with an electric 7-track debut EP, “Arcane.” Unconventionally, Mali found refuge in translating his emotions into rap after reading the dictionary back to front. Opening with the infectious tracks “Strongest Wills” and “Puzzles”, the EP instantly bursts to life with the singer’s gripping cadence and potent story-telling depicting a visionary conviction that exceeds the affiliates around him.

Boasting heavy drill textures and emotive instrumentation, it’s in the closing track “Home” where we see NSJ Mali at his most effortless. Surrounded by inspired pianos and powerful vocal samples, the young lyricist delivers deep-rooted bars carrying the weight of his adversities and the lessons learnt throughout his journey. “This is it, my Magnum Opus,” he says. “My heart, mind and soul all into one project. This is ARCANE, a project about loss, love and growth. In my world, aggression, ruthlessness, crime, abuse, narcotics and evil run rampant and so only the strongest of wills survive.”

Here, we connected with the rapper to discuss his current influences, sound identity and the EP.

Who and what influences you?
My biggest inspirations are Johnny Pearson, Hans Zimmer and Philippe Brejean as well as movies and their soundtracks. Hearing “Time” by Hans Zimmer the first time I watched Inception triggered something in me but I didn’t really tap into it till a few years later.

How did you first begin writing lyrics and expressing yourself in that manner?
It all started with me reading the dictionary and becoming familiar with words that were once unknown.

How did you find the musical style that you wanted to create within?
I found my musical style through film and theatrical aspects, I like the way soundtracks build up and give that climatic feeling from scene to scene.

How would you describe the essence of your sound?
I would describe my sound as precise storytelling. For example, even the beats that I work on contain intricate details that could make my work seem ‘abstract’ to some but that’s what sets me apart. My sound is a representation of my emotions and where I’ve come from. It’s my outlet really.

How do you think you stand out from the busy UK rap scene?
My authenticity and vivid storytelling sets me apart from my peers within the music scene. I feel like the scene currently tends to only show the good side of things. I like to show everyone the reality.

How has signing for 2K Management altered your outlook and career advancement?
It was a big move for me due to the name and reputation that they have in the industry. It definitely has helped open more doors than I would’ve been able to alone.

Congratulations on your debut EP! How has the reception been since its release?
It’s honestly been amazing! Everyone has been telling me their favourite tracks and there’s been no negative feedback so it’s been great.

Where does the name “Arcane” stem from?
It defines a feeling I’ve felt for a long time… Being misunderstood or only understood by a small amount of people is something that has troubled me for a long time. I struggle with talking about things but I feel this project is me saying all the things I’m afraid to say in normal conversations.

What themes and concepts are you touching upon on the tape?
Love, growth, determination, pain and acceptance.

What do you hope listeners will take away from it?
I want listeners to know that they’re not experiencing what they’re going through alone.

What’s next for you?
We’ll just have to find out!
