It’s Friday and you know what that means! Cat Burns, Lucky Daye, and more star in this week’s new music roundup.

Cat Burns — “know that you’re not alone”

Multi-Brit-nominated Cat Burns is amongst the most essential voices in UK pop, seemingly refining her sound the closest she gets to the industry summit. The South London singer-songwriter is back with an uplifting new offering, “know that you’re not alone”, a track that brings one of Burn’s strongest vocal performances to date to the table, slick and warm, oozes positivity atop the upbeat instrumental.

Mount Kimbie — “Dumb Guitar!!”

One of the pioneering acts of modern UK electronic music, Dominic Maker and Kai Compos’ Mount Kimbie push sonic boundaries in a captivating, avant garde and visceral manner. They are back with the announcement of a 2024 world tour, and a new single “Dumb Guitar!!”. Ensuing the immersive King Krule-featuring “Boxing”, the new cut is hazy and stylistically eclectic, a fascinating and enthralling trip into the musical world off Mount Kimbie.

Lucky Daye – “That’s You”

Grammy winning singer-songwriter Lucky Daye is one of the most essential names in US contemporary R&B, a superb songwriter and manipulator of emotion. Following last year’s triumphant Table For Two, Daye has returned to once again inhabit the highest essence of his genre. Accompanied by a visual shot in his native New Orleans, “That’s You” lyrically exploring love, lost and longing atop the sultry instrumental palette.

Sevdaliza ft. Grimes – “Nothing Lasts Forever”

Iranian-Dutch multi-facet Sevdaliza leads the way in the pushing of boundaries and in innovation, with seemingly no top to her progression. On here new single, “Nothing Lasts Forever”, she collaborates with the iconic Grimes for a sleek, consuming cut that sonically merges electronic, pop, trance and Dutch gabber, while thematically the pair challenge the unrealistic expectations of female artists.

Strandz ft. Lancey Foux – “Feeling Alice”

One of London’s finest MCs, the swift rise of Strandz is well deserved. Following a busy summer, it feels like the rapper is next up, and with this new one that feeling is only enhanced. Enlisting the cutting edge talent off Lancey Foux, “Feeling Alive” is modern and fresh, forward thinking and colour, with Strandz once again proving his worth as a storytelling.

Allie X – “Black Eye”

Pop disciplinarian Allie X has a soaring musical vision; individual and boundary pushing in her approach, the songstress is never behind trends, only in front of them. Her latest release “Black Eye” is a suitably broody number for this time of year, with sharp, booming yet refined production housing Allie’s translucent vocals and ambiguous presence.

OneDa – “Pussy Power”

Mancunian spitter OneDa has flaunted her talent in its most cohesive form so far on her new EP “Pussy Power”. Slick atop the striking instrumentals that feel a simultaneous ode to the past and nod to the present, OneDa offers verses brimming with charisma and deft skill, gliding atop the eclectic beats with finessed performances and sharp lyrical acumen.

Blaqbonez – EMEKA MUST SHINE

Nigerian rapper an singer-songwriter Blaqbonez is known for his nuanced afro-fusion that puts his charisma at the front and centre. HIs new album, EMEKA MUST SHINE, is an effervescence, entertaining and evoking body of work, boasting collaborations with the likes of Black Sherif, Projexx, Odumodublvck and Ludacris.

Kwoli Black – “Imposter”

The Hackney-raised rapper has been assuredly rising through the ranks of alternative hip hop, and with “Imposter” continues on his path towards excellence. Thoughtful and subtly powerful, Black’s latest offering is a complex breakdown of self doubt, an inner reflection of the struggle-laden journey of any wannabe artist.

Bea Anderson – “Goodbye”

Enlisted as a finalist in MOBO UnSung’s Class Of 2023, Bea Anderson continues momentum delivering a raw and personal video for the live version of “Goodbye”, the lead single from her recent EP ‘The Classroom of Silence’. Recorded live at the esteemed Marshall Studios, “Goodbye” delves deeper into the idea of what true love should mean, guiding the listener on a path of transformation and healing, with her mesmerising R&B flavour and masterful storytelling. Now part of one of the most important programmes championing emerging artists in the UK, Bea’s partnership with MOBO’s UnSung will continue to underline her as a truly inspired voice challenging the perceptions of normality.

Bert — “I and You”

Multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer Bert just announced his newest musical endevours, the single “I and You.” Blending hip-hop, folk and breakbeat with a hint of jazz, the Leeds-based artist invites listeners to a sonic experience that’s both introspective and dark, with heartfelt lyrics and downtempo beats, and gradually grows towards an upbeat, electric, and intoxicating track. “This song started with just the words ‘I and You’ written in my notes, that I think was a random thought on a bus that I liked the way it read,” he shares. “I have been trying to start writing songs with just a sentence and my guitar, as a technique to distance my writing process from the DAW. I keep unintentionally putting broken beats and breaks into my tracks, probably due to my poor attention span and the fact that most things sound better with a breakbeat switch up haha.”

denn. — “it’s happening?”

NYC-based artist denn. took inspiration from the likes of modern indie-folk greats Clairo, Quinnie, Grace Abrams and Phoebe Bridgers on the making of his newest single, “it’s happening?.” By reimagining their melancholic style into his own, he created a track that delivers a blend of atmospheric indie-folk sounds with alt-bedroom pop. “[the song] is a culmination of romantic pain, fomo, and longing for what once was an honest confrontation against an amalgamation of memories and feelings of weakness whilst fighting in close combat with the urge for a permanent release from emotional turmoil inflicted by the withdrawal of a past love,” he shares.

Tim Lyre feat Tay Iwar — “Why Elvis”

Up-and-coming Afro-fusion virtuoso, Tim Lyre, has teamed up with the celebrated singer-songwriter, Tay Iwar, to deliver a soul-stirring new single titled ‘Why Evils’. This mesmerizing track serves as Tim’s fourth and final teaser for his upcoming EP, “MASTA”, out on November 15th. “Why Evils” is the opening track of the EP, offering a relaxed, chilled-back melodic embrace that perfectly translates Lyre’s musical essence, while inviting you to slow down, unwind, and savor a moment of introspection.

Hannah Thurlow — “Spin Change”

Ireland-born, London-based Hannah Thurlow is back with her newest musical project, the 4-track EP “Grip.” Today, she also releases the single “Spin Change”, a beat-driven track where she experiments with field recordings and sampling live drums to create off kilter sounds, illustrating her evolution as an artist that explores the beautiful intricacies of percussion and rhythm. “Listening to many different types of music whilst out in clubs has been a huge influence for me,” she comments. “I wanted to keep the track quite raw and keep some of the live recorded elements buried underneath. It was a great release for me to work on this record, making sounds that I love.”
