Vocally stunning and lyrically potent, she is standing out through her unique and poignant approach, inspired by the naturalistic conventions of the sound whilst pushing her style towards individualism with forward thinking production.

Solidifying her acclaim with two stellar EPs – “Future Me” and “Colour Your World” – Mega returned at the end of last month for the first time this year with a single that signified a new era of her artistic progression. Entitled “Don’t Get Too Close”, the track is groove-laden, slick and atmospheric, with Mega’s vocals are a towering presence – the epitome of elegance. Who and what influences you to write?
My love for people and wanting to share my experiences. I think music much bigger than myself and it’s incredible how far and wide music can travel.

How did you first found your love for music and performance?
I first found my love for music at an opera choir that I joined at 8 years old. I joined because my sister had ( I was always copying her) I didn’t think I was any good but then I realised that people were responding well to me singing and so this birthed my love for it. Despite it being an opera choir my audition still makes me laugh to this day – as it was a Britney spears song – “hit me baby one more time”.

Your sound is so diverse, how do you maintain coherency within its eclectic nature?
Thank you so much! I think that my take on music is much like who I am as a person – it is a reflection of that. There are different parts to my identity (while all still being me). Every single song is a reflection of me and so I feel that they are instantly connected – I think that is where the coherency can be felt.

How would you define your essence as an artist?
For me it’s all about connecting with others. That what inspires me and keeps me going. Connecting people and encouraging others to share their experiences so they don’t feel alone in them.

How do you feel reflecting back on your debut EP, “Future Me”?
It’s such a beautiful memory – I like to look at it like my little baby and it is so lovely to still see people discovering it for the first time. I love receiving so many messages and letter from people about it. Sometimes I’ll have a listen to it and find myself relating to the songs as if they were just written. ‘Colour your world’ is my second one that I put out after that a lot of the lyrics written in that EP still feels quite raw and relatable to me.

You recently returned with your first single of the year, “Don’t Get Too Close”. What does it tell us about your artistic direction?
I think apart of the cycle of life is that we grow and evolve, and we experience more things that shape us. I think for me that always impacts my artistic direction, The lyrics really form/cement the direction of the sound, the vibe, the instrumentation.

What was the creative process of the track?
I loved creating this track – it was super fun – I created with a friend/producer Jonny Hockings. I went into the studio one day and he had this interesting percussion sound which you can hear in beginning of the tune – it’s actually a dripping tap being recorded. I manipulated it and had the riff that you hear at the beginning of the song that Jonny is playing – I instantly loved it and the song was written and developed more alongside the production. I really favour organic elements of music and so I try to incorporate that in my music as much as possible – especially with the percussion sounds, a lot of it is using the body to form these sounds.

What is the meaning behind the track?
At one point in our lives, sometimes more than often, we find ourselves in relationships which lead to thought patterns that can be deemed as quite toxic or unhealthy and this song is about protecting your energy. Protecting your energy is crucial to your mental and physical health as it is the ultimate determinant of our peace and happiness. We give a lot of ourselves away every day and often it can be difficult to remove ourselves from negative distractions or situations in our lives. “Don’t Get Too Close” is an empowerment anthem, and an encouragement to continue on that journey of honouring and protecting your space and personal growth

Is it a sign of things to come with a new project on the way?
Most definitely. I am excited to share this next project with the world.

Where do you want to take your artistry?
I think I want to continue to be myself and challenge myself to be more of that even when it feels scary and not necessarily like the coolest thing.
