FAIR SHOT

A sparkling new not-for-profit space is changing the lives of young people with learning disabilities.

Covent Garden is the new stomping ground of Fair Shot — a non-profit café that is changing the landscape of disability support. Providing young people to the wealth of resources who might not otherwise have had access to, they give people with disabilities a ‘Fair Shot.’

Where visitors are concerned, Fair Shot has a dizzying array of dietary inclusive dishes, scrumptious pastries, and speciality coffee up for grabs. Whether you’re after seasonal dining options, such as roasted beetroot with feta, or trendy brunch options like overnight oats with caramelised pear — there’s something to tickle everyone’s fancy.

Fair Shot’s new space is a matter of expansion. Taking shape over two floors, including both a restaurant and office, there’s ample space for trainees to develop their craft. Each 12 of Fair Shot’s annual trainees are allocated a mentor to guide them towards independence and self-confidence. The restaurant’s vast 2,224 square foot size is not complete without a blacked-out sensory room — a safe haven for its neuro-divergent employees.

Dreamed up by the entrepreneur Bianca Tavella, the concept sprouted from the community she grew up in. Looking around at the 94% unemployment rate that disabled adults face, she decided to take action. Built on the foundation of alleviating this shocking statistic, this initiative has taken flight. Joining forces with other hospitality groups, such as Aquavit and Treehouse Hotel, each trainee is wholly supported in the progression of their career.

Reflecting on Fair Shot, Tavella imparts: “Fair Shot Café at The Yards is a welcoming place for anyone and everyone, its core values are all built on the promise of inclusion and it’s really a safe space where diversity is celebrated. In the short period of a year, our project has supported 21 young adults break through the unemployment cycle and barriers that their disability poses for them as individuals.”

Bringing together social enterprise and an all-encompassing dining experience, it’s worth giving this restaurant a Fair Shot.
