CAL IN RED – “ON THE DANCE FLOOR”

The Alt-Indie duo open us up to their emotional landscape with their sophomore EP.

Cal in Red is the indie outfit of brothers Connor and Kendall Wright, who unleash their music from their shared house in Michigan. The pair didn’t always live together – but their move wasn’t in vain. Reaching each other to record felt a lot like an odyssey, requiring hour long treks just to meet in the middle. Once they’d made that step, Kendall imparts: “It’s allowed us to really put our collective foot on the gas. It feels like there’s a newfound sense of security and longevity to the project. It feels good.”

With their recording schedule in order, the contents of their EP “On The Dance Floor” began to unfurl. The opening “Corvette” is accompanied by a stellar music video. Glittering guitars mingle with rattling beats, and the ever-so soft vocals bring the track back down to the ground. The track’s nostalgic visuals help to envelop the listeners even further into its soundscape, with the brothers’ grandfather even making a guest appearance.

Other tracks, such as “Replay (Lounge)” are more akin to ‘80s synth pop than Indie; shimmering synths and piercing kick drums propel the song along. The project concludes with the dreamy “Can I Call You Tonight? Quarterback”, which is a kaleidoscope of sound. Vocals, harmonies, and production embellishments meander from ear to ear, drawing the listener into the world Cal in Red have dreamed up for themselves.

Exploring themes from traditional masculinity, and anxiety, to aspirations within reach – “On The Dance Floor” is a triumph. Painting a portrait of the draws and perils of modern day life, from their perspective, we get an insight into the inner-workings of this creative force. Set to blaze through the US on a countrywide tour – 2023 will definitely be a year to remember.
