Rihanna, Emma Corrin, and Taylor Russell are among our standout fashion picks from the past year.

2022 is nearing to an end, and it’s been an eventful year to say the least. As the pandemic has started to ease, we’ve found ourselves scrambling for a sense of normalcy. Or perhaps, as demonstrated in the fashion sphere – we’ve pushed back – showing up even campier, chicer, and bolder than ever before. This year was full to the brim of iconic fashion moments, and we’ve rounded them up here for your reading pleasure. From beautiful bridal looks, and ubiquitous skirt sets, high camp to haute couture – we’ve got all the bases covered.

Starting off in a blaze, we must begin with Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s pregnancy announcement. While there were whispers about a baby on board, with compelling evidence offered up through the Twitter grapevine – this shoot silenced all the hearsay. In true New York fashion, the two strolled through the concrete streets hand in hand, dressed to the nines. Rocky’s look was slightly more casual, wherein black boots and patent leather trousers were paired with a knit sweater, Carhartt denim jacket and a beanie. Rihanna, on the other hand, was the baby bearer – so there was no other option but to glow. Wearing ultra-long ripped jeans, the star of the show was that bright pink vintage Chanel puffer jacket. Unbuttoned some of the way, so as to show off her bump of course, she added a gorgeous array of jewellry, and beads to adorn her belly. Too cute!

Coperni Cat

Next up is Miss Doja Cat. In April of this year she was making some serious waves with this utterly sensational look she wore to the Grammys. Sparkly, bedazzled, and jewelled up – Doja Cat looked like a vision in a sky blue Versace dress. Floor length, the delicately crafted bustier of the dress was the cherry on top. With one strap coyly flung over the shoulder, the silk bralette underneath poked out ever so slightly. That said, what took the internet by storm was the Coperni x Home by Heven glass bag on her wrist. Matching the hue of her dress, everyone was immediately obsessed – and shortly thereafter it was everywhere. We love a trailblazing queen.

A helping hand

2022 was the year of the It Girl. From Bella Hadid, and Dua Lipa, to Taylor Russell – we’ve been graced with super-stylish ladies, whose lives we live through with a violent vicariousness. One It Girl in particular, Julia Fox, was taken up by the internet in one quick embrace – paving the way for weird, unsettling girls everywhere. Her American drawl is instantly recognisable, and her vocal fry reverberates straight through to our heart. The look that she wore to the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty was just one of the innumerable looks she pulled this year, but we chose this one because it’s peak Fox. A collaborative effort between artist Naomi Gilon and Danish brand Han Kjøbenhavn, the “grip dress” is super iconic. A full black leather number, the otherwise simple gown is given a whole new dimension with a hand gripping at Fox’s neck. It’s evocative, provocative, and downright cool; she’s forever our muse.

Miu Miu Mania

If we’re talking about fashion looks that defined the past year, then it would be inconceivable to leave out the Miu Miu micro mini skirt set. When the brand debuted their Spring 2022 Ready-to-wear collection, everyone was immediately besotted. It’s not hard to see why – the collection strikes a playful balance between corporate uniforms, and the revealing of skin. One particularly coveted piece was the super-short skirt set, comprising of two cropped pleated skirts — one used for its purpose, and the other as a bandeau. Appearing to be chopped off with reckless abandon, you could hardly scroll without seeing this set. Whether you grew sick of it, or never got tired of it – there’s no denying it was a hot commodity.

Here comes the bride

This year also marked a lot of milestones, wherein some fashion icons tied the knot with their beaus. One of these is Chloe Sevigny – who’s arguably one of the most iconic It Girls ever. First put on the map after her film debut in the 1995 cult classic Kids, she’s been serving up fashion looks for us all to marvel at ever since. This year, Sevigny got married – in custom Mugler, no less. Dubbed the “Super Flower Blood Moon Total Eclipse Catsuit” – it does what it says on the tin. Lacy and white, Mugler’s signature detailing elevates the look. With a matching bolero and flowers in her hair to boot, Sevigny made for such a beautiful bride.

Married in style

On the topic of brides, there was another wedding that had the internet going feral. Stylist Rachael Rodgers got married this summer in Naples, and her entire wedding seemed like a dream. Going through three outfit changes, each look was just as gorgeous as the next. Her bridal look was, of course, all white – consisting of a ruffle-edged, archival Vivienne Westwood corset, capris, and the Loewe rose heels. Her veil was seemingly miles long, but the cherry on top was the two oversized bows on either side of her head. But that’s not all – her cake cutting look was a recreation of the YSL SS99 bridal collection look worn by Laetitia Casta, and her party look was a sensationally sparkly vintage Paco Rabanne number. Who’s doing it like her?

Fish out of water

Next up is Emma Corrin, who’s a certified look-turner. Whether they’re offering up refined chicness, or high camp – we’re never not here for it. One look of theirs that had people talking this was this JW Anderson look, plucked straight from the designer’s Spring 2023 collection. The young actor is never one to shy away from the weirder side, and for that we’re grateful. It makes sense then that Corrin would join forces with JW Anderson – whose collections are filled to the brim with camp galore. With the help of longtime stylist Harry Lambert, the two brought us this playful vision – which is literally, a fish in a bag. All we have to say is, slay!

Sensational in Schiaparelli

To bring our round-up to a fiery end, we’ll finish strong with Taylor Russell. Emerging as one of the shining It Girls of 2022, she showed up to the London premiere of Bones and All to stunt in Schiaparelli. Consisting of a floor length skirt, it’s draped, and secured with velvet bows on either side. Underneath is a champagne-coloured boned corset, cinching the actress’ waist, while also adding another dimension. Up top is a sharp-shouldered cropped jacket, complete with intricate embroidered grape vines. With a velvet choker and a boater hat to boot, this look is sculptural, boxy, and refined. We’re no cannibals, but this look is undoubtedly delicious.
