PREMIERE: JENNY PALACIOS – “CLEAN BREAK”

The Toronto-based singer/songwriter and producer melds together alt, emo, and pop to dream up new single “Clean Break”.

Hailing from Toronto, Canada – Jenny Palacios is shaping up to be a shining star within the alt pop scene. Fusing together a concoction of artistic inspiration, what results is a stunningly melancholic feast for the ears. Enlisting the help of Phoenix Arn-Horn from Courage My Love and grunge project Softcult, Palacios has been penning and crafting up a plethora of dark indie-pop singles that toe the line between modern synth pop, and a nostalgic, alternative sound.

“Clean Break” is the sequel to the young artist’s previously released song, “Convenient”. While the former song offers up an abundance of reasons as to why a relationship is no longer serving Palacios, “Clean Break” builds upon that narrative – coming to a lyrical conclusion that some things are better off in the past. “Clean Break” emerges from the uncharted waters you often find yourself in after breaking up with someone. Do you retreat back to comfort, and reach out again? Or, do you charge full steam ahead without them? Synths sparkle and shimmer, while slightly distorted drums bring the track down to the ground. Reverberating guitars lilt along with the lyrics – and what results is pure nostalgic bliss.

The young artist reflects on the track, saying: “I wrote this song right after a FaceTime call where at the end of it, I just had this sinking feeling in my gut. I was still hoping that they’d change their mind on a Wednesday night, months after we’d called things off. When that obviously didn’t happen, I was ugly crying to all of Taylor Swift and Michelle Branch’s discography, looking for something to remedy how I felt. I couldn’t find anything saying ‘Seriously? Get up, dust off and go back to moving on, you’re going to be okay.’ So I wrote it all out.”

We could all take a page from Palacios’ book – while wallowing in sadness can feel comforting, sometimes we just need to bite the bullet and get on with it. Palacios is new in the scene, but if “Clean Break” is anything to go by, then we’re buzzing to see what else she pulls out of the bag.
