It can take decades for traditions to form, however, in some cases, they just slide into place, in the same way snowdrops fall inexorably onto the ground. And such has Phoebe Bridger’s annual Christmas cover become synonymous with our festive traditions, we only really believe the big day is looming when we catch wind of her latest interpretation of a classic Christmas cut from yesteryear.

For 2022, the Wonderland Autumn 2021 cover star has lent her vocal chops to the ambling country of Chicago husband and wife duo The Handsome Family’s 2000 track, “So Much Wine”. And whilst Bridgers’ approach to Christmas music takes a more pared-back approach than the dazzle of the likes of Mariah’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, Bridgers proves year on year that she’s the perfect vessel for a moment of Christmas reflection.

All proceeds from the track go to The Los Angeles LGBT Center, one of the few federally qualified health centres with providers specialising in substance abuse treatment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and those living with HIV. It’s also the world’s largest LGBT+ nonprofit, helping tens of thousands of queer people every month with essential services.

With production from longstanding Bridgers collaborators Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska, plus a credit for beau and Wonderland Summer 2020 cover star Paul Mescal, “So Much Wine” offers the perfect slice of Bridgers heaven just in time to close out the year.
