SCREEN WONDERS

Persuasion, Blonde and Hocus Pocus 2 feature in this week’s trailer round-up.

Persuasion

Unlike Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice adaptation, it’s safe to say her novel Persuasion has long awaited its time to bask in the rays of the novel adaptation sun. Well, it’s time is here, as the trailer for the Dakota Johnson-starring romance crashed onto our screens this month. With the Fifty Shades of Grey actress stepping into the shoes of the original book’s lead, Anne Elliot, we are ushered into her romantically chaotic world. When her old flame Frederick Wentworth returns after a prolonged absence, Anne is faced with the impossible choice of rekindling their relationship, or leaving the past behind her in pursuit of new romantic beginnings – a classic tale of tortured love, right? This one is sure to be warming hearts upon its release on July 8th.

Blonde

Since Kim K turned up to the Met Gala in the “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress, we’ve all been slightly obsessed with all things Marylin Monroe. Well, Netflix is here to feed our obsession with the release of the official teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated biopic, Blonde. The biographical film we’ve waited all too long for will provide emotional insight into the rise to fame and personal turmoil the star experienced, all delivered to us by the incomparable Ana de Armas – who boasts a remarkable likeness to the icon. This is not to be missed upon its release on September 23rd.

Hocus Pocus 2

30 years after the original film’s release, we are being transported back into the twisted world of the Sanderson Sisters with the long-awaited Hocus Pocus 2 – well done Disney, you’ve answered all of our childhood prayers. The spooky comedy sees Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy return to Salem on another quest for eternal life. Of course, such a plot comes with a healthy dose of mischief, twists and light-hearted humour, making it one sure to plunge us all into a blissfully nostalgic trance. Crashing into cinemas on September 30th, we couldn’t be more excited to see our favourite sisters back doing what they do best.

Black Adam

While we are very used to seeing Dwayne Johnson in his Baywatch bag, the superstar is joining forces with the likes of Pierce Brosnan and Noah Centineo as he steps into a new era in fantasy film, Black Adam. Boasting powers bestowed upon him by Egyptian Gods, Adam returns after a 5000-year-long slumber to bring justice to the lands and avenge his son, all the while battling the very fine line between good and evil. With a cast also boasting icons such as Quintessa Swindell and Sarah Shahi, it is safe to say that a DC hit is heading our way on October 21st.

Smile

Rounding off this week’s screen wonders is the trailer for Smile – which is not as happy as the title would suggest. Proving that there is something deeply sinister and twisted about a smile, the trailer for the new horror is disturbing, to say the least. After witnessing the traumatic death of one of her patients, psychiatrist Rose must navigate a terrifying reality if she wants to survive: a mental hospital full of patients that won’t stop smiling at her. Creepy, we know. Don’t watch this one alone upon its release on August 28th.
