After dropping ominous hints across her official website that a new album, RENAISSANCE, is in our midst, the icon has finally dropped the first crumb in the gingerbread trail with the release of track number six: “Break My Soul”. Proving that the material of her new music will remain true to its namesake, “Break My Soul” is a tangible departure from Beyoncé’s habitual R&B soundscape. Led by a driving kick drum, bouncy keyboards and a sampling of Robyn S’s dance floor classic, “Show Me Love”, “Break My Soul” catapults Beyoncé straight into the floor-filling groove of 90s house music — proving there is no genre in which Beyoncé cannot dominate.

Though her sound might be slightly different in its appearance, the DNA of Beyoncé’s stylings is gladly detectable throughout. Pulsing with the all-encompassing self-empowerment synonymous with her sound, the new single opens with the relatable pressures of being consumed by commercial culture. Building into an arm-raising melody, she sings of the joys of breaking free to “build [your] own foundation”. Balancing the narrative with soul-soaked vocals and a small verse of rap, Beyoncé’s vocal acrobatics are officially in full swing — and leave us all the more wanting for her RENAISSANCE to arrive.
