First Halle Bailey being cast in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, and now Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi has been selected as Tinkerbell in the upcoming Disney remake of Peter Pan – 2020 is really the year of black girl magic. Revealed via DEADLINE earlier this week, the film – set to be directed by David Lowery (A Ghost Story) – marks the first time a person of colour has filled the role that has so far featured exclusively white actresses.

The Grown-ish actress is set to join Jude Law, who will play Captain Hook and Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson who have also been cast at title characters. While we are yet to hear any news on when filming will commence or a release date, rumours have been swirling that the release is set to be in cinemas and will not follow the Disney+ streaming route.
