As relatable as it is refreshing, Sex Education is one of the most inclusive and honest depictions of teenage life that’s graced the small screen in recent years. After Season One ended on several heart-wrenching cliffhangers, we’ve been counting down the days until the second installment, which we now know will arrive with eight new episodes next year.

In the dangerously binge-worthy Netflix show’s first season, Asa Butterfield’s socially awkward Otis Milburn and his endearing, flamboyant best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) befriended Emma Mackey’s Maeve, who persuaded Otis to start a sex therapy clinic with her at their school, using the knowledge gleaned from his sex-positive, sex therapist mum Jean (played by the brilliant Gillian Anderson). If you can get past the fact that the high school has an undeniably American feel but everyone has an English accent and uses British slang, the show deals ingeniously with pressing issues like revenge porn, peer pressure, consent, slut-shaming and self-esteem, with diversity that doesn’t feel forced or far-fetched.

As Emma Mackey told us in our interview with the cast earlier this year, “It’s great to see those tropes dissolve a little bit: the jock’s got anxiety, the most unpopular girl in school is popular for all the wrong reasons, but she doesn’t give a shit… It’s just great. I love it”.

We can’t help but agree. After a jaw-dropping plot twist in the first season, the new episodes will see Connor Swindell’s Adam Roth at military school whilst still struggling with his sexuality, while Jean navigates her new relationship with Jakob (Mikael Persbrandt), and jock Jackon (Kedar Williams-Stirling) continues to feel the weight of pressure from his overachieving parents to succeed.

Sex Education will return to Netflix in 2020.
