PFW: Balenciaga SS17

Balenciaga take big shoulders out of the 80s and into SS17.

April Showers

Maybe it’s because it’s for SS17, but Demna Gvasalia made sure that we’re ready for rain or shine this season. From the start of the show, belted trenches in oxblood leather, classic beige and black set the tone for Balenciaga’s outerwear – it was both chic and represented Gvasalia’s thoughts on fashion fetishism. Latex and patent capes were present, with a hooded pale yellow rain poncho protecting us from the showers and a red hooded nylon parka was tucked in under the chin, keeping pesky spring time rain drops at bay.

Bold Shoulder

Shoulder pads were taken to the extreme by Gvasalia. Not content with usual padding, he constructed whalebone rods and secured them in trench coats and boxy jackets, bringing models’ shoulders up to their ears and warping proportions to a new level. The powerful and oversized silhouette has something that Gvasalia set the trend on, so it’s not surprising he’s taken it to a whole new level and gone a step further than his copy-cats. This innovative look at silhouette and garment structure from Balenciaga isn’t surprising when you consider Gvasalia (one of fashion’s most current most cherished designers) is at the helm.

Morning, Noon, Night

Mix and matching lady-like garments with psychedelic disco wear, Balenciaga takes you through the day with morning-meeting ready boots to bright purple spandex pointy stilettos that stretch up to the hip. A rainbow assortment of spandex was both slinky and glamorous, with a psychedelic lime green 60s-style floral print adorning a skin-tight two piece, a flowing dress and boots. For your more lady-like events, there were brooches tacked onto halterneck dresses and used to cinch in waists, and pinstripe bow blouses in cornflower blue and pink paired with matching earrings and skin-tight trousers providing your day wear. Balenciaga SS17 has an outfit for every hour of your day.
