PFW: MAISON MARGIELA SS17

Maison Margiela was a kaleidoscope of the wacky, surreal and beautiful.

Space-like and Sublime Headwear

For SS17, Maison Margiela creative director John Galliano made no attempt to quash his grand and eccentric side. From the bizarre but brilliant headwear – the laser-cut, skin-tight swimming cap-like hats that covered half of the head or wrapped around like bandana aren’t for the faint-hearted – to the racing driver hat complete with eye shield, Maison Margiela had your SS17 headwear sorted. There were also science goggles, elf ears and headsets ready to make an unusual statement, keeping your eyes firmly up.

Upside-down and Inside-out

Continuing with the weird and wonderful theme, Galliano flipped our expectations of outerwear upside down. After the first look, a pastel mint rain mac worn the right way up, macs were often spun around, twisted inside out and wrapped around the body, often left open to reveal the layers underneath. Elsewhere, a net jacket was layered over a windbreaker jacket and a black and turquoise scuba suit was rolled down past the waist to reveal a nude body suit. It was nonsensical, but a true Galliano splash of fun.

Surreal Rainbow

From the intergalactic make-up to the gleaming turquoise sandals, Maison Margiela looked to every area of the colour chart for SS17. From pastel yellow eyebrows paired with a neon orange headset to teal netted tops and the combination of a coral body and cardigan with a navy rucksack and yoga mat, Maison Margiela tasted the rainbow. Black was a staple hue that created a stark contrast with a shocking bright red, while muted khaki and deep, shiny navy also made an impact, breaking away from the blasting neons; the colour combinations turned these grand and eccentric garments into something worthy of the title of “art”.
