NYFW: Tibi SS17

Amy Smilovic creates order out of chaos for SS17.

Clean, Modern, Relaxed, Feminine and Corsets

In an interview with Business of Fashion Any Smilovic, creative director of Tibi, shares the four adjectives that change the direction of the brand’s design identity indefinitely. The lucky words chosen by Smilovic and her team were clean, modern, relaxed, and feminine. With this in mind, it was interesting to see the usage of corsets, the furthest thing from modern and relaxed, to cinch the waist and exposed –or create on the thin models– curves for Spring 2017. Fortunately, the torso training garment worked in the brand’s favor because what followed the pinstriped pants suit was a testament to why Tibi is such a beloved brand today.

Chaotic Ideas

To compliment the corseted waist, Smilovic added volume. Sleeves were oversized and pant legs were wide, although, a pair of slim fit acid wash jeans managed to slip through the cracks. Suiting came in both pants and short sets and exposed gold buttons detailing completed knee length pencil skirts with pockets. Other embellished all over pieces included a white long sleeve blouse with a high turtle neck and on tea length dresses in white and black. Closing out the show was a gang of frocks in all different flavors, short, long, deep-v necks, ruffled hems, pleated fronts, exposed shoulders, in hues of robin egg blue, apricot and blush tones.

From Chaos Comes Order

Can order come out of chaos? That’s the question Smilovic challenged in her show notes which accompanied redeemable gift cards that many will surely use at the Tibi flagship boutique on Wooster Street. If this collection’s purpose was to aid us in our answer, then I’m sure the masses would say yes. So many ideas found themselves within this season’s line-up, yet it all succeeded in making sense. The flow –or should we say order– of this collection was spot on and with that said, the Tibi team can celebrate.
