7 WONDERS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOLLY PARTON

The country wonder Dolly Parton turned 70 today. Here’s our favourite moments from the icon.

Happy Birthday Dolly Parton! With all that youthful zeal (and proud-of-it plastic surgery) you would hardly believe it, but everyone’s favourite pint-size Country ‘n’ Western superstar turns 70 today! Over the years she’s given us some classic tracks – has there ever been a greater ode to the dreary conventionality of the office job than ‘9 to 5’? – some iconic roles (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, we’re looking at you) and, of course her very own theme park: Dollywood. If those aren’t enough reasons to celebrate the big 7-0 with a list of her 7 greatest moments, we don’t know what is.

Playing Glastonbury

There was some unabashed joy in watching the teeny tiny Dolly in the middle of huge Pyramid stage. The best bit was watching her pretend to play a saxophone, why she did it is still a mystery but it was magical. There was also even a whole Dolly Parton dance that the entire security team joined in on, she deserves it, a living legend.

She wrote that Whitney Houston song

Not quite as breathtaking and dramatic as Whitney’s version from The Bodyguard, soz Dolls, but the original, “I Will Always Love You” from The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas will still get you every time, promise.

Dollywood

Located in Tennessee, Dollywood is fun for all the family. With over three million visitors per year, the theme park located in Dolly’s home state features the traditional crafts and music of the area. The park’s slogan is even, “Love every moment,” the most wholesome place in the world.

All those albums

Just the 42 studio albums that is, plus 4 live, plus 182 compilations. Enough? Never. The best? Arguably Jolene (except it’s not arguable, it’s the best).

She has a heart of gold

Literally, her Imagination Library sends books to underprivileged children monthly. It’s gone from supporting just her home county of East Tennessee to sending out over three quarters of a million books every single month.

Playboy

What’s not to love about the cutest, most innocent country-singin’ princess showing everyone another side posing for the most notorious men’s magazine in the world. Dolly gave one of her first high profile interviews with playboy in October 1978 and to this day, the cover image remains entirely iconic.

She doesn’t give AF

“I’m in the public eye, so I don’t care who knows what I get done,” the ageless Parton said of her beauty regimen. “If I see something sagging, dragging or bagging, I get it sucked, tucked or plucked. It takes a lot of money to look as cheap as I look.”
